About the College/Unit/Department:The School of Environmental, Civil, Agricultural, and Mechanical (ECAM) Engineering and the Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems (IRIS) at the University of Georgia (UGA) has an opening to support a 2-year postdoctoral fellow. IRIS (http://www.iris.uga.edu/) advances the integration of natural and conventional infrastructure systems to strengthen society’s long-term resilience to flooding, sea level rise, drought, and other disruptions. Position Summary:A postdoctoral position is available on a College of Engineering research project at the University of Georgia, Athens Campus. The candidate will work on a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers-funded project: Engineering with Nature Initiative.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position:Candidates should have a doctoral degree from an accredited institution in civil or environmental engineering or related engineering or science discipline and be interested in coastal resiliency with particular focus on NNBFs.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies :The postdoctoral fellow will work jointly with Dr. Brian Bledsoe and Dr. Matthew Bilskie as part of large interdisciplinary team. The fellow will be expected to organize relevant literature on natural and nature-based features (NNBF) and to design, setup and perform numerical experiments of simulating storm surge/waves and/or river hydraulics for various NNBF configurations. The fellow is also expected to contribute and lead writing of peer-reviewed journal articles, present research results, and assist in preparing proposals for external funding. This position is for a minimum of 2 years and renewed on an annual basis upon satisfactory performance.
A successful candidate will have:
(1) a strong analytic and quantitative background with effective oral communication and writing skills
(2) strong programming/scripting skills in Fortran, Python, Matlab, or C/C++
(3) experience in working with coastal hydrodynamic models (such as ADCIRC) and/or hydraulic models (such as HEC-RAS)
(4) familiar with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) particularly in geospatial optimization techniques.
Knowledge working with high performance computing workflows is a plus.
