Preferred QualificationsPosition Summary

The Safety and Compliance Specialist position involves an advanced level of safety and compliance work under general supervision. This position bridges the gap between the responsibilities of a Safety and Compliance Associate II and an Assistant Safety and Compliance Officer. The Safety and Compliance Specialist will maintain a high degree of professionalism and integrity in representing the University and model a culture of safety. This position will engage in active consensus building and principle-based negotiation. The Safety and Compliance Specialist is a liaison and point-of-contact within specific programmatic areas for campus departments, including areas such as research, clinical, academic, athletic, and support services. The Safety and Compliance Specialist is responsible for providing comprehensive health, safety, and/or compliance services and assisting in the University goal of a safe, healthy, and compliant workplace and academic environment, seeking assistance from superiors as needed. The Safety and Compliance Specialist is a front-line consultant involved with developing engagement insights and helping to drive results for the client. The individual in this position will identify critical information, develop analysis, share information, and assist the more senior associates with recommendations and assessments related to the engagement issues. The work of a Safety and Compliance Specialist is primarily administrative in nature and involves activities such as: the receipt, processing, and maintenance of health, safety and compliance protocols; advising faculty, staff, students and researchers regarding safety and compliance issues; and safety and compliance documentation and communication. The Safety and Compliance Specialist will handle a case load of safety and/or compliance related tasks of moderate complexity with general supervision. Other responsibilities include actively promoting and managing specific aspects of safety and compliance, providing assistance to faculty, staff, and students, and interpreting basic to moderately complex agency policies and regulations, guidelines, and standards.

Professionalism and integrity in representing safety and/or compliance offices or programs
- Leadership aptitude including clear focus on customer service as well as safety and compliance; ability to work within a strong and effective team gaining synergy across discipline boundaries
- Ability to grasp needs and concerns in varied areas of safety and compliance and solve complex problems through compromise when necessary and appropriate
- Uses initiative to perform recurring tasks from established procedures and performs newly assigned tasks from direct instruction
- Excellent professional oral and written communication skills to maintain effective and cooperative relationships with students, faculty, staff, coworkers, public, and regulatory agencies
- Ability to implement continuous quality improvement through the use of relevant qualitative and quantitative metrics in assessing compliance and performance
- Ability to use electronic safety, compliance, and research administration platforms; word processing, database; spreadsheet; and presentation computer programs
- Solid knowledge of State and Federal environmental health and safety regulations as well as nationally accepted standards, guidelines, and other related conventions on safety and compliance
- Solid knowledge and skills in technical safety disciplines (e.g., radiation safety, industrial hygiene, biosafety, chemical safety, environmental monitoring and sampling methods).
- Solid knowledge and skills to assist with in-service training and educational programs in applicable programmatic areas
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously, due to the diversity of safety and compliance services, and the wide-range of potential work locations on campus
- Participate as a member of an on-call response team for after-hours events
- Wear and use personal protective equipment for hazardous materials handling and incident response
- Eligible to complete and maintain applicable professional/technical certifications

Physical Demands

- Stand, walk, and negotiate occasional awkward work locations and paths of travel.
- Participate in an occupational health and safety program and wear a respirator, pass physical fitness medical evaluation and lift at least 30 lbs. above the head.
- Periodically perform short duration physical exertions, including light-medium weight lifting, pushing, pulling, stair or ladder climbing, etc. in support of a safety investigation, area or operations survey, or incident response.
- Work in a variety of physical environments, including weather extremes, potential confined spaces, chemical/biological/radiological laboratories, animal care and use facilities, etc.

Cross-disciplinary laboratory audits and Lab Closing/lab Opening Consultations:

Demonstrate competency to perform laboratory inspections, audits, consultations, lab openings and closings and compliance reviews of research laboratories, general science labs, teaching labs, support facilities, general work areas of campus.

Chematix/Environmental Management System (EMS) upkeep of laboratory metrics/reports:

Consult with ORS Supervisor, Principal Investigators and laboratory personnel on inspection findings and provide appropriate recommendations based on regulatory compliance and best practice guidance, appropriate selection of personal protective equipment, engineering practices and administrative controls. Collect, file and submit lab findings into Chematix system as part of the integrated environmental management system. Generate report findings for trend analysis and stakeholder discussion.

Member of Hazardous Materials Spill Response Team/On-Call After Hours PREHS Rotation:

Demonstrate competency with HAZWOPER, NIMS, ICS and special hazards training on how to analyze chemical classes, perform risk assessments, select and wear personal protective equipment and drill on procedures guideline. Position involves being part of the on-call rotation and assignment for afterhours, weekend and holiday emergency response.

- Participate, assist, prepare and conduct training on a wide range of topics covering chemical safety, laboratory safety, and other EH&S related customized training topics.
- Assist with the development of written summaries, plans, training modules, fact sheets and other communications as requested by ORS Supervisor.
- Participates in special projects based on individual talents and interest of staff in support of the ORS mission to inform, support and audit for compliance and safety work practices of research activities at UGA.
- Perform all necessary tasks involved with assisting lab personnel in the safe, legal and responsible operation of laboratory based research.
