Position DescriptionThe Laboratory Animal Coordinator will work as a Research Technician in the areas of fetal alcohol disorders, choline, and fatty acids.
The position requires the ability to follow protocol in the administration of dietary interventions (including preparing diets daily), developmental tests, and cognitive assessments. This technician must be able to work independently, follow protocols precisely, exercise judgment in planning and modifying techniques, collecting and processing rat tissue samples, maintaining databases, manage sample collections, and prepare written reports. After an initial training period, the incumbent should be able to take a general experimental outline and follow a detailed protocol with minimal supervision, perform the experiment, maintain the database, manage the samples, and prepare a focused summary. The individual should be able to instruct others (e.g., coworkers, students) in the techniques used and to occasionally supervise less experienced personnel. Specific techniques to be performed include animal husbandry, breeding, animal dissection, fixing and slicing of brain, genotyping, Morris Water Maze, and Western blots.
Specific skills sought include:
- Assist in generating and maintaining animal colonies including preparing and administering study diets
- Perform various other tasks within the lab, including ordering supplies and autoclaving – Administer developmental and cognitive assessments
- Working with rats, including breeding colony management, rat handling and necropsy, and working with animal models – Performing Western blots and other techniques as needed
- Compiling, analyzing, and documenting experimental results
- Laboratory responsibilities such as preparing reagents and solutions, cleaning and maintaining laboratory equipment, and some ordering of laboratory supplies.
Note: This position is located on the NC Research Campus in Kannapolis, NC (near Charlotte), approximately 2 hours from Chapel Hill.
This is a 3-year time-limited position.
Minimum Education and Experience RequirementsDemonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Essential Skills, Knowledge and AbilitiesExperience working with laboratory animals.
Preferred QualificationsHigh school diploma or equivalent plus one year of directly related experience. – Certificate in bench lab techniques or Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., genetics, biochemistry, etc.)
Experience with microscopy techniques, harvesting and preparing tissue samples for microscopy techniques, animal experiments, and molecular biology.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.
