The University of Tennessee is seeking an individual with a strong background in Linux system administration for the Joint Institute for Computational Sciences (JICS). JICS serves as the nexus of interdisciplinary, collaborative computational and data science and engineering research, leveraging the unique capabilities of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the University of Tennessee. The position reports to the High Performance Computing Operations Group Leader at JICS.
Major Duties/Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will play a key role in evaluating, deploying, maintaining, and leading system administration tasks/projects at JICS. The candidate will also interface with users and provide assistance to enable their successful use of JICS computing resources.
Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
•Installing, configuring, and maintaining computer system software.
•Diagnosing system operational problems quickly and effectively.
•Documenting system administration procedures for routine and complex tasks.
•Take ownership of user problems and provide resolution through research, analysis, and creation/application of new hardware and software technologies.
•Proactively ensure that users have up-to-date information about the system, including any changes and their impact on the users.


QualificationsQualifications Required:
•Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or closely related field, or equivalent experience and training.
•Strong understanding of system administration issues, technologies, and best practices.
•At least three years of in depth administration with Linux or Unix based systems.
•Working knowledge of configuration management software such as Ansible or Puppet.
•Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work as a team player.
•Strong verbal and written communication skills.
•Proactive and solution-oriented problem solver.
Preferred Qualifications:
•Experience with Linux clusters, parallel file systems, and associated high-performance networks.
•Working knowledge of DNS, LDAP, NFS, DHCP, RT, Apache, Postfix, Kickstart, and TFTPboot.
•Working knowledge of containerization technologies.
•Experience writing significant scripts with Perl, Python, Bash, sh, or similar scripting languages.
•Experience in working with internal and external customers, helping users onboard and use systems effectively.
