SUMMARY:

The Department Head will serve as a full-time, 9-month tenured position, at the Associate or Full Professor rank, with quarter-time teaching responsibilities in the Department of Music. The preferred candidate will have notable and distinguished prior experience as a Department of Music administrator and advocate, and be a proven leader with excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The Department Head is responsible for developing and sustaining a productive and collaborative atmosphere, mentoring faculty, developing an effective shared governance system, and working effectively with the college dean and senior administration. Additional responsibilities will include building excellence in curriculum, scheduling coursework in collaboration with the department faculty, leading the faculty in creating and realizing a unified vision for the future of the department, initiating and sustaining external funding to support faculty RSCA and providing direction to and supervising the staff of the department.

The Department of Music has been consistently recognized as one of the leading producers of music educators in the state of Texas. Faculty members include active regional, national, and international performers. Several hold posts in Dallas-area organizations such as the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Dallas Opera Orchestra, Dallas Winds, the Dallas based Orpheus Chamber Singers, and numerous regional orchestras. Our faculty members hold leadership positions in state and national music organizations as well as international opera summer programs, and are active presenters at music conferences. We claim highly sought-after composers, authors, clinicians, and adjudicators.

Student ensembles have recently performed at Carnegie Hall, the Dallas Meyerson Symphony Center, and The Dallas Moody Performance Hall, as well as at conferences TMEA, SWACDA, CBDNA, and BOA by invitation. Student ensembles have enjoyed touring in countries such as France, Austria, and Brazil.

The Department of Music is housed in a state-of-the-art music building, which was built in 2010, that features rehearsal spaces, classrooms, teaching studios, music technology labs, a recital hall and the Finney Concert Hall. With an unparalleled acoustic design, the 520 seat Finney Concert Hall continues to be the most sought after performance venue in East Texas. With these innovative facilities and a vibrant music major population currently numbering over 300 undergraduate and graduate students, the department continues its mission of excellence in performance and music education.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Works collaboratively with faculty to build a positive culture and effective structures, policies and channels of communications; keeps faculty informed of institutional issues in a timely and transparent fashion.
  • Serves as the chief advocate for advancing the mission of the Department, the College and the Institution.
  • Assesses departmental performance and determines critical requirements for program practices and documentation. Oversees the assessment processes used for regional and national accreditation.
  • Leads best practice expectations for recruitment and retention of students, faculty success, alumni relations.
  • Leads best practice expectations for securing and managing external funding, and other scholarly and fundraising initiatives.
  • Promotes and mentors the professional development of faculty within the academic department. Encourages and supports attendance at professional conferences, grant writing, academic and research publications, creative activity, professional consulting, mentoring, and community engagement. Mentors faculty to success in achieving tenure and advancing through ranks. Maintains professional development and ongoing success of faculty.
  • Performs annual evaluations of full- and part-time faculty and staff. Develops annual performance plans outlining what each faculty or staff member will accomplish in the coming year. Combines results of individual plans to produce an annual performance plan for the academic unit as a whole.
  • Ensures that departmental course offerings optimize resources and are offered in a timely manner with adequate student input to ensure the smooth flow of student progress toward graduation.
  • Exercises fiduciary responsibility on all departmental operating, special, and endowment accounts as well as fixed and consumable assets assigned to departmental programs. Monitors dedicated scholarships closely and ensures that awards are made in a timely fashion.
  • Develops and improves departmental plan for curriculum development, review and revision. Utilizes course student assessments and input from faculty, program graduates, and external stakeholders/employers. Utilizes results from these assessments to identify and respond to areas of greater demand and to seek out new areas of strength.
  • Oversees, in conjunction with department faculty and staff, an effective and continuous student academic advising program for each academic program of study in the department. Monitors graduation rates, and ensures compliance with any relevant Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board requirements, National Association of Schools of Music, particularly, where appropriate, state-mandated core curriculum learning goals. Collaborates with departmental faculty to mentor new graduate students and ensure that any graduate assistants employed by the department, including those supported by external funds, receive appropriate training and mentoring to enable them to perform their job assignments professionally.
  • Serves as the primary liaison with the dean, the graduate school, the registrar, and institutional effectiveness, and assorted university support services.
  • Oversees the departmental and program marketing, including the website.
  • Manages departmental student issues such as the graduation process, graduate teaching assistants, field-based student teaching and alumni records.
  • Manages the employment of adjunct faculty and graduate assistants.
  • Manages the ordering of departmental equipment and supplies, facility maintenance and renovations.
  • Serves on selected departmental, college and university committees and completes various required reports on time.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: Terminal degree in an appropriate discipline from an accredited institution
  • Experience / Knowledge / Skills: Academic background commensurate with the rank of associate or full professor. Proven records of success in the following areas:
    • College/University leadership experience
    • Program, faculty and department assessment, and personnel management (including recruiting and retention of quality full- and part-time faculty)
    • Higher education teaching
    • Active regional or national profile in the applicant’s professional or scholarly music field
    • Commitment to shared governance and quality programs
    • Evidence of effective interaction and communication with students, faculty, administration, alumni and community as well as active participation in professional organizations
  • Ability to: Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with faculty, staff, and students, as well as people from culturally diverse backgrounds. Ability to work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends as needed. Ability to travel and represent the department at meetings associated with TAMS, NASM and TMEA

  • Notable and distinguished leadership experience as Department Head Administrator
  • Experience in budget control, grant writing, and securing external funding
  • Undergraduate and Graduate advising experience
  • Undergraduate and Graduate curriculum development experience
  • A proven record of commitment to music education and the success of undergraduate and graduate music education students
