Job Summary

The Academic Counseling Center for Excellence in the Social Sciences (ACCESS) is a student support, advising, academic assistance, retention, and service-oriented unit in the Division of Academic Affairs. Assisting students from admission through graduation, our mission is to be the single point of entry to provide resources and non-major related advising for new and continuing students to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve academic success and graduate in a timely manner.

In consultation with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Student Success in the College of Social Sciences, the Director directs and supervises the employees and activities of the Center, helps shape the strategic direction of our student success initiatives, and is responsible for outreach to a wide range of campus and community partners. Under limited supervision, the Director leads, develops, coordinates, implements, and assesses unit activities, services, and programs to ensure effective and timely students support. As chair of the College Advising Council, the Director also coordinates advising services with all departments in the College of Social Sciences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct and contribute to student success efforts within the Center.
  • Work with the Associate Dean to develop data-informed strategies and actions to improve student success in the College.
  • Direct the development, implementation, utilization, and maintenance of advising tracking (e.g., Spartan Connect) systems and campaigns for the College.
  • Work with the Center staff to develop services for improving educational strategies (e.g., study skills, time management, creating educational environments conductive for success, etc.) for students in the College.
  • Resolve student issues or recommend appropriate courses of action related to difficult academic situations.
  • In consultation with the Associate Dean, direct the development and evaluation of student success policies and procedures for the Center and College.
  • Direct the application of CSU policies and procedures as expressed in Title V and Chancellor’s Office Executive Orders as well as SJSU’s academic policies and procedures.
  • Interpret and explain policies to staff members and provide clarification on policies and procedures to departments within the college.
  • Work with the Center staff to develop written and online materials to assist students in navigating the University and their pathway to graduation.
  • Provide direct advising services as needed to support the success of the Center’s mission.
  • In coordination with the Associate Dean, develop an annual budget and forecast expenses.
  • Provide work-lead and prioritize tasks to facilitate daily work flow and maintain a healthy and effective working environment.
  • Coordinate and provide leadership related to all efforts to hire, train, and supervise the Center staff and student peer advisors.
  • In collaboration with the Associate Dean, support staff professional development opportunities.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • General Knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior, techniques used in counseling, interviewing, and investigation and college student development theory.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, lead and provide work lead direction.
  • Ability to interpret and define problems, evaluates and analyzes situations, draw valid conclusions, project various consequences, and adopt effective courses of action.
  • Ability to determine proper techniques and actions to utilize while engaged with individuals behaving in argumentative or sensitive manner.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; oversee projects; and provide guidance and direction for the work of others.
  • Ability to recognize multicultural, multi-sexed, and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a group with diverse backgrounds, perspectives, styles, and goals.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues related to student sub-populations, especially those which might be considered academically at-risk.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in issues related to university admissions and registration, general education, and student success.
  • Ability to analyze budgetary data, conduct preliminary analyses, and make accurate projections using business mathematics
  • Through knowledge of English grammar, business writing, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Ability to compose and appropriately format various types of professional correspondence, reports and communications.
  • Ability to review and verify complex records and detailed information for compliance with CSU requirements, and interpret information from a variety of institutions, including foreign institutions, with differing record systems.
  • Strong interpersonal skill for maintaining contact with customers, providing strong positive customer services, and soliciting and responding to feedback for improved services.
  • Thorough knowledge of advising-related services within PeopleSoft.
  • Proficient using related software applications (e.g., Google apps, word processing, spreadsheet, database management)
  • Ability to extract, analyze, and professionally present data from Office of Institutional Research.
  • Working knowledge of staff and student recruitment, appointment, and annual evaluation procedures.
  • Experience with day-to-day management of the administrative operations and staff personnel functions for the Center.

Required Qualifications

  • Equivalent of four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems
  • Four years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience which includes experience in advising students individually and in groups, and in analysis and resolution of complex student services problems
  • A Master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work or a job-related field may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
  • A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling, guidance or a job-related field may be substituted for two years of the required professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field
  • Demonstrated strong understanding of CSU and SJSU policies and procedures related to academic advising
  • Experience with CSU advising systems like EAB (Spartan Connect) and PeopleSoft (MyProgress, MyPlanner, etc.)
  • Experience supervising staff and working effectively with management, chairs, and other university personnel
  • Experience developing and leading student success initiatives in a higher education setting

Compensation

Classification: Student Services Professional IV
Hiring Range: $5,351/month - $7,633/month
