Position Profile

The Southern University System invites applications for the position of Chancellor for Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO). As the chief executive officer, the Chancellor is responsible for the administration of all activities of the SUNO campus including, but not limited to, academic, financial, student, administrative affairs and other support activities. S/He reports to the Southern University System President and through him to the Southern University System Board of Supervisors, as required.

On September 4, 1956, Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) was founded as a branch unit of Southern University and Agricultural & Mechanical College in Baton Rouge. SUNO opened in 1959, in historic Pontchartrain Park, a middle-class community of largely African Americans. For over 60 years, SUNO has been providing accessible and high-quality educational options for the Greater New Orleans metropolitan community and surrounding areas.

SUNO currently has 332 full-time and 7 part-time employees. The current student enrollment is approximately 2,395, of which 90 instructional faculty and academic staff administer and support fifteen undergraduates, one associate, and four master's degree programs.

SUNO’s annual operating budget is approximately $38 million. The Park and Lake campuses are located on just over 60 acres, with a current combined value of approximately $166 million.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should possess the following:

  • An earned doctorate from an accredited institution;
  • Senior level administrative experience, preferably in higher education with experience working with various constituencies to include legislators, the governing boards, and accrediting bodies;
  • A thorough understanding of the financial issues facing HBCUs and demonstrated leadership in strategic planning and fiscal management;
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with various stakeholders to include legislators, alumni, media, and the community;
  • Ability to foster and maintain an innovative learning environment that attracts high-quality faculty, students, and staff;
  • Ability to address challenges by creating innovative solutions to advance SUNO’s future;
  • Ability to promote a shared vision which is aligned with the strategic plan of SUNO, especially in the areas of student recruitment and retention, infrastructure development, and enhanced technology; and
  • Ability to raise funds from varying sources in order to promote and support the value proposition of SUNO
