Washington University in St. Louis

EXECUTIVE VICE CHANCELLOR AND CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER

Washington University in St. Louis (Washington University), one of the nation’s premier private institutions of higher education, seeks nominations and applications for the position of Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). Reporting directly to the chancellor and working with senior leaders across the institution, the CAO is charged with ensuring operational excellence that advances the core mission of the university—education, research, and patient care—and enables it to remain one of the truly great institutions of higher learning in the world.

Founded in 1853, Washington University today is nationally and internationally renowned for teaching, learning, research, service to society, and patient care. Over the past 20 years the university has invested significantly in its facilities as well as its undergraduate and graduate education programs and its top-ranked medical school and academic health center. To further accelerate its remarkable upward trajectory, Washington University needs to advance and optimize systems and processes across the institution, especially in information technology, and deepen operational understanding and collaboration between the Danforth and Medical campuses.

The CAO reports to the chancellor and oversees core administrative functions for the university, including information technology, human resources, procurement, environmental health and safety, and emergency management. In addition, the CAO oversees operations at the six academic schools comprising the Danforth campus that include campus card services, parking and transportation, business process improvement, summer programs and conferences, and facilities management. The next CAO will be a vital partner to academic, administrative, and community leaders in the development and execution of the institution’s strategy and the fulfillment of its mission. The CAO must couple a deep commitment to academic and research excellence with significant and sophisticated technical and managerial experience. The CAO should also demonstrate an ability to lead diverse teams with trust and transparency, to work collaboratively with other senior leaders, and to provide both forward-thinking strategic counsel and tactical/operational expertise.
