The University of California Irvine (UCI) Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, are seeking applicants for a full-time salaried position, tenured at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. The position requires biostatistical or statistical expertise with an interest in biomedical research that enables a robust population science and cancer research agenda. An outstanding record of research excellence as evidenced by the ability to obtain and sustain independent and collaborative extramural NIH or other NIH-type funding is expected. Qualified applicants must have the demonstrated ability to work with a diverse group of colleagues and communities, and to educate and mentor a diverse and talented student body.

This Associate or Full Professor should have a demonstrated expertise in an area of biostatistics or statistics that will contribute to the mission of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, the emerging School of Public and Population Health and the Cancer Control Program within the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. A suitable candidate should have a track record of methodological and applied interdisciplinary research accomplishments and publications as well as interest in working with population scientists, clinical and basic science investigators focused on a range of conditions, including cancer.

The successful applicant will be expected to conduct collaborative and transdisciplinary research, maintain a strong publication record and have expertise that fills existing gaps and enables a robust cancer control and population sciences research agenda, including methodological work related to cancer research as well as design and analysis of clinical trials. They will join the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Cancer Control Program, actively participate in intra- and inter-programmatic activities, support the Center’s Community Outreach & Engagement efforts, help develop curriculum and coursework leading to graduate degrees in biostatistics as part of the planned development of a School of Public and Population Health, and contribute to growing the research and teaching missions of the rapidly growing College of Health Sciences at UCI.

Additionally, the successful candidate will oversee the Cancer Center’s Biostatistics Shared Resource (BSR). The BSR is composed of a manager and highly qualified biostatisticians. The BSR provides support in the design, conduct and analysis of clinical trials and cancer-related basic, translational and population-based studies. The Director of the BSR will be expected to develop novel methodologic approaches to address analytic challenges and ensure that state of the art methods are used to enhance cancer related research, in addition to the following responsibilities:

• Oversee all aspects of the Biostatistics Shared Resource including direct oversight of the Shared Resource Manager and other faculty level biostatisticians

• Write/prepare Shared Resource section for Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) applications (annually) and prepare/present Shared Resource poster at NCI CCSG site visits (every five years)

• Attend/present at Program Leader/Shared Resource Director & Manager meetings (quarterly), External Advisory Board and Internal Advisory Board meetings (each annually) and at Cancer Center Scientific Retreats (annually)

• Participate in Cancer Center Senior Leadership responsibilities including participation in all Cancer Center Strategic Planning activities and review of applications for pilot projects, other CFCCC pilot project funds, bridge funds, other discretionary support, as requested by the Cancer Center Director

Essential qualifications include:

• PhD or DrPH, or equivalent with training in biostatistics, statistics, or another related field

• Knowledge/appreciation of the value of biostatistics/statistics research and education and the ability to help integrate research into the community and/or clinical enterprises, including clinical trials

• A collaborative style that fosters and supports teamwork and innovation

• Experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate, graduate, and/or postdoctoral students

• Strong record of research accomplishments and publications with demonstrated experience relevant to clinical trials, cancer and population health

Desirable qualifications include:

• Current peer-reviewed funding in a cancer related area (Associate Professor or Full Professor)

• Demonstrated success in translating scientific discovery into new research directions applicable to populations at risk for cancer
