Basic Function:

The Associate Dean of Nursing reports directly to the Dean of Nursing. The Associate Dean of Nursing has a scholarly vision and exceptional leadership qualities in his/her ability to assist the Nursing Division Dean advance the College’s mission and vision, strategic goals, policies and procedures, as well as administrative decisions to the faculty, staff and students.
The Associate Dean cultivates constructive working relationships with the Dean, classified staff, full-time and adjunct teaching faculty in the division, and collaborates with Associate Deans and staff in other academic divisions, as needed. As assigned by the Dean, the Associate Dean may act in the Dean’s place for routine and specialized administrative and academic tasks and will perform special projects as assigned. NOVA faculty may be assigned to any campus based upon enrollment and staffing needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Associate Dean of Nursing include the following:
•Assists the Dean of Nursing with creating and developing an effective, collegial environment that fosters innovation and excellence in nursing education, clinical practice, and community service.
•Supports the Dean with daily operations, budget preparation, fiscal administration, and overall administrative management of the Nursing Division.
•Provides assistance with faculty/staff hiring, mentoring, and collaborates with nurse leaders in the program’s partnerships, community and professional outreach.
•Ensures sustainability and provides oversight of Virginia Board of Nursing approval and Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc. (ACEN) accreditation of the nursing program.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s degree with 18 graduate semester hours in Nursing. Minimum of 10 years FT (or FT equivalent) experience in Nursing, which should include progressive academic leadership experience in nursing education. Experience as committee chair, course/program lead and/or other academic leadership positions. Experience with accrediting and licensing agencies.

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctoral Degree in Nursing.

A minimum of three years in management / administration and experience with specific accrediting and licensing agencies and processes such as ACEN and VBON.Strong leadership and familiarity with community college processes and programs, particularly in a Nursing/medical program. Experience with Associate Degree Nursing programs and curriculum and teaching at the community college level.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

•Excellent organizational, priority management, teamwork skills, and effective use of information technology for communication and decision-support.
•Knowledge and experience with online and simulation instructional delivery and technology initiatives.
•Strong interpersonal, team building and both written and verbal communication skills.
•Knowledge of state, federal and local laws/regulations relating to nursing programs compliance and regulatory agencies.
•Proficient skills and experience in Microsoft Office computer software systems that includes Word, Excel, and Power Point.
•Knowledge of constituencies served by the college.
•Communications Skills – Possesses strong communication skills, both verbal, and written and expresses thoughts in an organized, concise manner. Actively listens to the issues of others in a manner that elicits cooperation and support. Demonstrates an effective and adaptive skill in communicating with students/individuals under stress. Develops and delivers effective presentations. Has the ability to present information and ideas to diverse groups.
•Market Knowledge – Continuously seeks to stay current and be at the leading edge in his/her field and is committed to continuous learning; one that is self-motivated and self-directed, being able to work independently with sense of urgency to task completion.

Is creative, innovative and takes advantage of opportunities, while recognizing the necessity of working with limited resources and in alignment with the strategic directions of the College.
