Animal Caretaker (Part-time, hourly)

Job Title: Part Time Animal Caretaker
Facility: CMSRU Vivarium
Reports To: Vivarium Manager
Responsible for the daily feeding, cleaning and observation of research animals in support of the laboratory animal husbandry program. Cleans and disinfects cages, rooms and equipment. Supports veterinary staff and researchers with handling and restraint of animals and administration of treatments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Observes, feeds, and cleans research animals. Documents census and observations.
- Monitors and documents environmental parameters in animal rooms.
- Conducts inventory checks including feed, bedding and pharmaceuticals.
- Receives animal and feed/bedding shipments
- Assists Veterinary Staff with the handling and restraint of research animals.
- Cleans and sanitizes cages, animal rooms, and related equipment.
- Assists Supervisor and Veterinary Staff with diagnostic and technical procedures.
- Assists investigators with handling, restraint and technical procedures such as maintaining breeding colonies, transgenic research and/or biohazard studies.
- Attends continuing education meetings.
- Performs other related duties as required.
To perform this job successfully, and individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Must be available to work weekends and holidays as needed.
Education and/or Experience
- High School Education or Equivalent
- AALAS certification and prior experience in the care and handling of laboratory animals highly desirable.
