The School of Data Science (SDS) at UNC Charlotte is an industry-university-state partnership, supported by the Academic Affairs’ Office of the Provost, the College of Computing and Informatics, the Belk College of Business, the College of Health and Human Services, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and other academic units.
The SDS oversees two graduate programs in Health Informatics and Analytics (HIA) and Data Science and Business Analytics (DSBA) with over 250 full and part-time students enrolled. A new undergraduate degree launched in fall 2020 and a Ph.D. program is in the planning stages.
The mission of the School of Data Science is to (a) develop analytics talents and (b) define and drive the data science research agenda, thus leading to improved applications of analytics in social, environmental, business, health, government, and economic domains.
SDS provides an effective solution to the challenge of “Big Data” by creating education, training, and research programs in data science and analytics, as well as integrating them with business experience.

Description of Work:

Thus, the Job Responsibilities and Essential Functions for Non-Tenure Track Faculty should be interpreted in the context of the related departmental and collegiate teaching goals.

Teaching – Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, and grading student work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

This position will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses, conduct research in the fields of expertise and participate in academic service and interdisciplinary activities. This position will consult with faculty across all colleges and domains and serve as a Data Scientist for these research teams. The person in this position will develop statistical models and code as part of the research teams. They will collaborate with principal investigators, graduate students and other research teams to utilize Hadoop infrastructure and high-performance computing platforms to develop models and outcomes to drive the research forward. The person is an expert in big data and data science tools and platforms. They will guide the continual evolution of the UNC Charlotte research data platforms and the integration and blending of data. This position will play multiple roles: an instructor, a consultant, and a researcher.

Minimum Experience/Education:

UNC Charlotte gives primary consideration to the earned masters and/or terminal degree in the teaching discipline or a related discipline.

Preferred Education, Skills and Experience:

Ph.D. in the assigned field and a minimum of ten years of professional experience in their realm of assigned responsibility.
Knowledge and experience in statistical and data mining techniques: GLM/Regression, Random Forest, Boosting, various neural network techniques, video and text mining, social network analysis/graph.
Experience querying databases and using statistical computer languages: Julia, NoSQL, Python, R, SQL, or related languages.
Experience using high-performance modeling platforms: DigitalOcean, Redshift, S3, Spark, and related platforms.
Experience analyzing data with third-party provider tools: AWS, Google, Microsoft Azure, and distributed data/computing tools: Gurobi, Hadoop, Hive, Map/Reduce, Spark, and related tools.
Experience visualizing/presenting data for stakeholders using: Tableau, R Shiny, PowerBI, or other visualization and reporting platforms
A licensed professional or hold similar certifications or credentials in their field.
Extensive practical experience in the mutually agreed upon realms of responsibility.
Experience in individualized or group instruction and mentoring and use of technology in instruction; social, cultural and/or economic community engagement activities; and social, cultural, and/or economic community partnerships.
Experience in developing creative activities in professional or service venues and in procuring funding for research or creative projects.
Evidence of publication of material related to use of statistical or data mining techniques in the professional or service setting.
Ability to contribute to the diversity initiatives of the unit, department, college and university.
Ability and willingness to participate in the unit, department, college and university affairs.
Familiarity with privacy, security, and data compliance rules and regulations.
