The Department of Surgery at St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health Toronto and the University of Toronto are inviting applications for a permanent full-time position as the Director of Endovascular Research and Innovation with special focus in Endovascular Neurosurgery.

The successful candidate will take the role of Director of Endovascular Research and Innovation and advance endovascular innovation and research to the next frontier and be responsible for advancing the universally utilized imaging-based technologies required in Endovascular Neurosurgery. The successful candidate would be capable to advance innovation and care in endovascular Cardiology, Cardiac Surgery and Vascular Surgery. The successful applicant will lead a program of research that will have global impact in endovascular device development, robotic endovascular technology and therapies and biological systems. In addition, experience in clinical studies investigating underlying cerebrovascular disease and clinical outcomes will be desired and supported by our world class Keenan Research Centre.

The candidate must have a proven ability to advance the care of patients with cerebrovascular disease through a commitment to clinical excellence, team based care, innovation and research at and be at the academic rank of Associate or Full Professor. We seek a candidate who will be successful as a surgeon scientist and who could be competitive for a Research Chair, in order to propel forward a program of globally competitive research and innovation. The successful candidate will possess a record of commitment to teaching and adherence to the highest standards of professionalism.

The successful applicant will have completed specialty training in either Neurosurgery, with fellowship training in Interventional Neuroradiology or Endovascular Neurosurgery. The candidate must be proficient in the English language, hold a medical degree, and be eligible for appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor at the University of Toronto and for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as well as licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

Clinically, the successful candidate will be joining an Endovascular Neurosurgery/Interventional Neuroradiology Service that performs approximately 180 aneurysm repairs per year, 50-100 carotid artery interventions, a significant volume of EVT, brain vascular malformation embolization and percutaneous spinal therapies per year. St. Michael’s Hospital is a designated comprehensive Stroke Center with tertiary/quaternary neurosurgical service performing over 2000 procedures per year.

Unity Health Toronto is a health network, comprised of Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre and St. Michael’s Hospital, that works to advance the health of everyone in our urban communities and beyond. Research at Unity Health Toronto is conducted by 244 world-class scientists in two main areas - the Keenan Research Centre for Biomedical Science, which focuses on basic and translational science research, and the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, which focuses on clinical and health services research. Unity Health Toronto’s research funding totals $85 million annually.

The successful candidate will join a high functioning team comprised of one Endovascular Neurosurgeon and two Interventional Neuroradiologists. The service is supported by Neurology, Neurosurgery, Medical imaging, Anaesthesia and Critical Care. The Hospital houses a state of the art 19 bed trauma/neuro ICU. Over the last 10 years, this service has become one of the busiest in Canada. A strong collaboration with the Department of Medical Imaging is anticipated as it has been for the past 15 years.

Estimated remuneration is negotiable and is expected to principally derive from clinical activity, research support and will depend upon qualifications and experience.
