This position will involve experimental research in a Level 2 microbiology lab, and will involve the assessment of germicidal activity and photobiological safety of surfaces after exposure to UV-C. The characterization work will include the development of radiation dose and timing tables for specific bacteria and viruses, and the evaluation of UV-C efficacy for various microbes. Experience in standard assays for microbe assessment and characterization is required.

Minimum Qualifications


A Ph.D. with demonstrated academic and research expertise in the fields microbiology, biophysics, molecular biology and bio-organic chemistry.


Qualified applicants need to have prior experience in molecular biology techniques, and antiviral and antibacterial testing (e.g., with SARS-CoV-2 variants) with advanced knowledge in the biological sciences, organic synthesis, and photonics required.

At least 10 years research experience in biophysics, molecular biology techniques and cell cultures.

4+ years of industrial experience in a contract research organization.

Able to work well under pressure with high work-loads and balancing conflicting demands.

Key duties:

  • Designing, planning and executing research aimed at advancing our understanding of how UV-C dose impacts sterilization of various surfaces.
  • Providing guidance and mentoring junior trainees and technical support staff.
  • Coordinating efforts by a dynamic and productive research team with diverse expertise.
  • Liaising with industry collaborators and assisting in the compilation, analysis and reporting of research findings to researchers within and outside of the program.
  • Preparing manuscripts for submission to peer review publications/journals.
  • Presenting findings at local, national and international conferences.
  • Assisting with research proposals to be submitted to granting agencies and progress reporting.
  • Assisting with general laboratory biosafety and maintenance, including inventories, equipment repair, ordering, and shipping reagents.

Beyond these responsibilities, the individual will be expected to participate in the preparation of grant applications. At all times, the individual will be asked to support the overall research and teaching missions of the lab.
