Hiring Department Office of Research and Economic & Community Development Note: Initially this position will be remote ResponsibilitiesThe Grant Writer is responsible for assisting faculty across campus in finding funding and preparing competitive proposals to federal agencies, private foundations, and other funders through rigorous review of proposals narrative, editing, and assistance in drafting non-science sections of proposals. The Grant Writer Works as part of a team to provide a broad range of research development and grant writing support to enhance proposal quality and provide outstanding support to faculty to encourage grant seeking.

1. Develops a strong understanding of faculty research interests across campus through active outreach including face-to-face, zoom, dept. meetings, training workshops, newsletters and related efforts
2. Identifies and distributes funding opportunities targeted to individual faculty research interests and departments
3. Analyzes funding announcements and advises faculty on fit and required application components
4. Researches federal funding agencies and foundations including funding priorities, pay lines, and awards to advise investigators on funding fit and development of successful proposals
5. Develops a strong body of knowledge of key federal funding agencies including NIH, NSF, Department of Education and stays current with agency priorities, initiatives, and changes in funding requirements
6. Maintains knowledge of best practice and processes related to proposal development
7. Reviews proposals to ensure alignment and adherence to agency guidelines
8. Edits proposals to improve readability with attention to structure, headings, usage, tone, active voice, and visual formatting
9. Drafts non-science sections of proposals including facilities, institutional resources, letters of support, memorandums of understanding, and related documents
10. Assists investigators in meeting deadlines through development of project time lines, proposal writing outlines, assisting with non-science components of applications, looking up information, and connecting faculty to collaborators and other campus resources
11. Develops templates, boilerplate narrative, and related grant writing resources and tools
12. Manages multiple proposals, organizes and priorities work flow to ensure on-time submissions and excellent service to faculty and staff colleagues
13. Prepares content for monthly newsletter including funding opportunities, agency updates, event notices, articles etc.
14. Assists in planning and staffing faculty events including designing flyers and promotional and web materials for events

Minimum QualificationsA Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary. Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree is preferred. Five years of federal proposal writing experience, preferably in a higher education environment. Strong track record of successfully obtaining funding either as primary grant writer or consultant. Familiarity with major federal and non-federal sponsors that support university research. GPC or other Research certification preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Strong writing skills including logic, structure, clarity, syntax, use of persuasion, and active voice (Portfolio of funded grants or writing samples required)
2. Knowledge of federal and foundation funding
3. Strong attention to detail and well developed organizational skills
4. Ability to work under deadline and manage multiple projects to meet sponsor deadlines
5. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and independently
6. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collegially with faculty and staff
7. Ability to provide constructive feedback to others using tact and encouragement
8. Demonstrate a high level of self-motivation and initiative
9. Ability to think and work strategically and with attention to detail
10. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint,) Outlook, Adobe Acrobat, and search engines
11. Design skills and proficiency (or ability to learn) with Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Microsoft Publisher or other design software desirable
12. Ability to design and build website pages desirable

Minimum Salary

Commensurate with qualifications and experience. This position will be filled at the Grant Writer or Senior Grant Writer level depending on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
