The College of Nursing (CON) is an integral part of East Carolina University (ECU). The ECU CON occupies a significant position in the health education hierarchy of the university and performs an important role in health education. Its purposes are to (1) provide the student with educational opportunities which prepare the individual for a professional career of nursing in homes, communities, clinics, hospitals, and health care agencies, and (2) provide the opportunity for continuing personal and professional development for students, working professionals, and faculty.

Technology is a significant tool/service at the ECU CON. It is integral to every aspect of the college’s mission, from the computers that our instructors, researchers and staff use, to the computer technologies used on our clinical/simulation labs. This position includes the support logistics, resource management, strategic planning, and supervisory oversight for the technology services for the ECU CON. This position reports directly to the ECU CON Associate Dean for Support Services.

Job Duties

This position reports directly to the ECU CON Associate Dean for Support Services.

This position requires a wide range of technical knowledge and experience. The person in this position leads the technical support group for the ECU CON and provides the necessary guidance and oversight for the successful support and advancement of the college’s technical activities and projects. The person in this position will have a complete overview of the college’s technical components, with the necessary technical knowledge and ability to diagnose and successfully resolve any technical issue. This position also requires the ability to gather and quickly synthesize information regarding the college’s technical systems in order to provide guidance, support, and planning for current and future technical activities. This includes the specialized array of technologies in the clinical/simulation labs, the technologies associated with distance education (DE), server resources, web/software applications, and a wide assortment of other technologies that are used in special projects grant activities faculty research.

The person in this position utilizes solid understanding of how to best utilize available resources and the ability to research and develop creative solutions. This position regularly requires the ability to work collaboratively to: provide ongoing issue resolution, formulate effective support strategies, and provide technical direction for the college. Technical solutions and strategies often span multiple technical areas. The level of technical knowledge and experience necessary for this position requires a thorough understanding of the way in which different technical areas, groups, and systems throughout the university work together.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Specific Responsibilities Include, but not limited to:

Business Functions:

The person in this position provides resources and strategic oversight to ensure that the designated technical personnel in the ECU CON:

• Maintain and update CON official university website;

• Develop and maintain peripheral websites associated with internal CON groups, academic units, or research projects; and,

• Develop and maintain custom, in-house software applications to facilitate the college’s business functions.

Supervision:

• Supervises or ensures supervision of direct and indirect reports for the ECU CON technology team, including staff, EHRA non-teaching faculty and graduate assistants;

• Has working knowledge and command of all aspects of required IT functions of college in order to supervise diverse team members; and,

• Provides guidance, support, encouragement, positive feedback, and counseling to team members; and,

• Set areas of responsibility for team members and defines and modifies associated duties as needed; and,

• Performs logistics of work schedules and annual evaluations; and,

• Fills in as needed when a team members are on scheduled or unscheduled leave.

Academic Support:

The person in this position provides resources and strategic oversight to ensure that the designated technical personnel in the ECU CON:

• Act as classroom and lab triage/first responders for support of faculty, staff and students for SMART classroom, A/V or other technical problems;

• Facilitate desktop computer and other technical hardware and software distribution and support; and,

• Ensure support of DE, including: Blackboard, Voice Thread, Zoom, iWebFolio, Mediasite training and support, and all other technologies used by the college’s personnel.

Simulation labs (CILs) Support:

The person in this position provides resources and strategic oversight to ensure that the designated technical personnel in the ECU CON:

• Oversee and facilitate complex A/V recording for student simulations and student/faculty review;

• Oversee and assist in configuration of complex room construction, installation/infrastructure/maintenance/support; and,

• Provide support for simulator hardware and software applications; and,

• Develop and maintain specialty in-house software applications for simulation/clinical labs.

Server Resources:

The person in this position provides resources and strategic oversight to ensure that the designated technical personnel in the ECU CON:

• Provide and maintain server management for ECU CON server resources;

• Facilitate SharePoint (intranet} configuration, administration and support; and,

• Facilitate shared drive configuration, administration, and support.

Special Projects:

The person in this position provides resources and strategic oversight to ensure that the designated technical personnel in the ECU CON:

• Produce video recordings, editing, and production for faculty projects, research projects and promotional materials for the college;

• Develop and maintain custom and commercial software projects to support the undergraduate and graduate programs and research grants as requested by faculty and administration.

Service:

• Serves on university level committees to represent CON. Serves on and chairs IT-related committees within CON.

Professional development and promotion:

• Provides presentations, assists with grant development and publications related to faculty grant proposals, research projects and activities.

Minimum Education/Experience

Master’s degree and 1-2 years’ experience; or a bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years’ experience: or an equivalent combination of education and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

Bachelor’s degree and three or more years progressively responsible work experience in computer and network operations. Strong supervisory skills. Advanced computer skills. Well-developed understanding of microcomputers; knowledge of multimedia hardware-software. Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of administration. Proficiency using instructional technology, computing resources, networks, Internet and WWW applications.
