The University of Virginia is in need of collaborative and dynamic candidates for our open Employee Relations (ER) Consultant position. This ER Consultant position will be assigned to the Academic Division and will serve as a strategic, consultative partner for client areas and stakeholders groups.
As an integral member of the Employee Relations Team, the ER Consultant reports to the Manager of Employee Relations and works with assigned business areas across the Academic Division of the University. This role serves as a subject matter expert in the area of employee relations and the primary focus of this position is to:
- Investigate employee matters and concerns working in partnership with HRBPs and other stakeholders
- Conduct formal investigations into allegations of employee misconduct
- Oversee the grievance process and assist with preparation for hearings in collaboration with stakeholders
- Partner with key stakeholders to deliver appropriate employee resources
- Analyze ER trends to develop solutions and strategies and make recommendations based on ER related data
- Provide advice and counsel to HR professionals and managers on workplace issues regarding policy interpretation and application
- Conduct and oversee the progressive disciplinary process that includes informal levels of counseling, formal discipline and the grievance procedure process
- Assist with managing the involuntary termination and offboarding process.
The ability to work effectively and autonomously with all levels within the organization, and maintain flexibility and adaptability is essential. The incumbent must be able to manage multiple projects and tasks while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. The ability to work independently and as part of a team, and excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, time management, and facilitation skills are a must. A knowledge of relevant state and federal employment laws and governmental compliance requirements related to HR management and employment functions is essential. Working knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint is required. Prior systems experience with HRIS, Applicant Tracking, Scanning and ER Information Systems desired.

A Bachelor's degree and at least four years of relevant experience is required or a Master's degree with one year of exempt-level experience. Preference will be given to candidates with a degree in a related field and over seven years of experience in an employee relations role and/or with the University. The anticipated hiring range for this role is $60,000-$70,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
