Job Details

Saint Michael's College seeks qualified candidates for a tenure track, assistant professor position in its Computer Science (CS) department starting in the fall semester of the academic year 2021-22. The ideal candidate would be responsible for teaching our senior level Software Engineering course as well as teaching one of our three lower level programming courses: Intro to Computer Science 1 & 2 (in Java), and Data Structures (using C++). The new CS faculty member should also be able to teach several other upper level CS courses/topics, including but not limited to: Programming Languages, crypto/information security and/or cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence and/or Machine Learning, Data Base, or Computer Networks - as well as any other specific areas of expertise that the candidate may have (which was not listed here), and would be appropriate for an undergraduate major in CS. The normal teaching load is three courses (four credits each) per semester.

Benefits include health, dental, vision, life, disability, 401(k), employee and dependent tuition benefits, and discounted gym membership.

Requirements:

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the field through peer-reviewed scholarship consistent with the departmental standards of performance required for continuing appointment. The position also carries student advisement responsibilities and other service obligations consistent with the needs of the department and the College. College level teaching experience is preferred as is a PhD in Computer Science or a related field; however, candidates with a Master's in CS and extensive professional experience may also be considered.

Organization

The happiest college on earth.

Across campus, you’ll find bright, engaged, friendly, happy students and faculty. Our formula for happiness? A close campus community, a perspective changing exploration of the liberal arts, a legacy of service and a stunning location.

At Saint Michael’s College, our students learn what matters: they learn about the environment, the global community, new media, psychology, international business, world religions, and politics. And they learn how to live in a warm, caring community that values independence and diversity as well as close, caring relationships. All this while being right next to the awesome Green Mountains and Burlington, one of America’s greatest college towns.

An Education for Life
We offer 29 majors - each grounded in our liberal studies core. What does that mean? It means that students are going to learn a whole lot about the world, past, present and future. They’ll learn things they’ll need four years from now, and things they’ll recall 20 years from now. They’ll learn to read, write, solve problems, and think for themselves, while not forgetting about others.

Every course is taught by a professor, not a graduate assistant. Our student-faculty ratio is just 12:1, and that means students get personal attention in class and out of class. Our professors challenge their students, but are known for helping them to reach those challenges too.

In Service to the World
Service to the community and to all humankind is a vibrant part of student life, reflecting the heritage of service of the Edmundite priests who founded Saint Michael’s. More than 70% of Saint Mike’s students join in service projects through Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts (MOVE), reflecting a unique passion for social justice issues on campus. And students can find spiritual engagement through the extensive programming offered by the Office of Edmundite Campus Ministry.

An Unsurpassed Vermont Location
Situated just outside of Burlington, Vermont’s largest city, the area attracts 14,000 students enrolled in five local colleges and universities. In addition to the shops, restaurants and cafes of the Church Street Marketplace and a lively local music scene, Burlington offers great opportunities for hands-on learning through internships. Vermont, known for its natural beauty, environmentalism and year-round recreational activities, inspires many students to take advantage of some of the best skiing in the East.
