Working Title: Director of Biomedical Engineering Teaching Laboratories –

The Director is responsible for ensuring that the laboratory teaching experience is of the highest quality. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• supervision of laboratory staff

• training of teaching assistants

• working with faculty and TAs to maintain and upgrade laboratory modules

• assisting students in laboratory and design courses.

The Director maintains lab budgetary control, ensures compliance with all lab safety requirements (electrical, biological, chemical, fire safety, machining), and ensures compliance with animal use regulations. As needed, the Director manages any upgrading or relocation of lab facilities, in coordination with contractors and other Duke departments.

The Director interacts with professors, staff, and students within the Biomedical Engineering Department and other Duke departments and supports outreach programs. The Director's technical knowledge should span some of the following areas: electronics, electro-physiology, materials, chemistry, optics, design, structural mechanics & dynamics, fluid mechanics, biology, and genomics.

An academic degree of BS or higher in BME or related fields is required. An MS or PhD is preferred. If the highest degree attained is a BS, extensive teaching lab experience is expected.

Minimum Qualifications


Bachelors degree in a scientific discipline or in the health or physical sciences. Masters degree preferred.


Minimum of seven years of experience. Must have previous experience managing projects. Experience must include a minimum of three years in a supervisory/managerial role. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
