Position Summary:

The Director Environmental Health & Safety directs the development, implementation, and maintenance of campus environmental health programs including hazardous waste management, chemical and laboratory safety, radiation safety, laser safety, biological safety, storm water protection plan, and all aspects of the University's environmental programs

Duties & Responsibilities:

    Manage all University Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) programs including: Hazardous Waste, Chemical and Lab Safety, Biological Safety, Radiation Safety, Environmental Compliance (Stormwater, SPCC and Air), Hazard Communication, Hazardous Materials Shipping, Occupational Safety and Biological Waste in accordance with federal, state and local regulations.Develop and maintain appropriate training for all EHS programs as required by federal, local and state regulations.Serve as university Biosafety Officer and Radiation Safety Officer.Consults with Deans, Directors, Chairs, and faculty/staff to identify problems, develop improvements, create and maintain quality standards.Perform inspections to ensure compliance with federal, state and local regulations.Conduct or coordinate environmental audits as needed including: air quality testing, chemical hazard assessment, and asbestos managementCoordinate and serve as backup for Workers’ Compensation claim administration.Supervise EHS staff and delegate responsibilities as appropriate.Reviews proposed construction projects to determine the impact on environmental health.Serves as liaison with federal, state, and local authorities in matters related to environmental health and safetyCoordinate and maintain the Commercial Driver's License Drug ProgramOther duties as assigned

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

Scientific knowledge of the physical and natural sciences, as well as, general knowledge in public administration
Knowledge of state, federal and university policies, procedures and regulations

Ability to coordinate and lead special projects in functional areas assigned
Ability to develop, recommend and implement university policies and procedures germane to the functional area assigned to the position

General Days/Hours:

Monday - Friday
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Additional hours as requested and/or needed
Regular and reliable attendance

The Director of EH&S has frequent contact with the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Human Resources, Faculty, Staff, and Environmental Health Professionals at the state and federal level. Participation in local, state, and national organizations is encouraged

Minimum Qualifications:

An earned Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or a related field

Five (5) years relevant work experience
