Purpose of Job

The WBC Director plans and organizes a comprehensive array of business counseling services, public training and education programs, and business support services to meet the needs of business women entrepreneurs, start-ups, minorities and the underserved. The WBC focuses on providing these services to women, minorities, and communities that are socially and economically disadvantaged who seek support.

Scope of Responsibilities

The WBC Director will lead day to day operations, programmatic efforts including developing and providing entrepreneurship education and business ownership training, coordinating the efforts of the WBC staff and counseling team, offering counseling and assistance to the participants of the WBC, and providing budgetary and administrative oversight. Much of the programmatic focus is on serving women, those who are socially and economically disadvantaged, and underrepresented minority groups in the community.

Essential Job Functions

•Oversee the entire operation of the WBC.
•Develop and devise relevant and appropriate educational, networking and mentoring opportunities needed to help women entrepreneurs, minority, and underserved business owners be successful.
•Manage the WBC staff and Business Counselors towards established goals in regards to business starts, development of new ventures, serving women and under- served minority groups, and other financial and customer service-related metrics.
•Coordinate the efforts of the WBC to provide support via mentoring, internships, networking and learning opportunities to student entrepreneurs at the community high schools.
•Serve as a representative of the WBC and develop and maintain relationships with SBA and other key agencies and stakeholders. Includes appearing and speaking on behalf of the WBC at events.
•Drive marketing strategy for the WBC, including advertising and public relations, networking and media exposure, with support from Alcorn State University.
•Collaborate with the WBC Board of Directors to ensure relevance to the business community, financial support and feasibility
•Counsel and assist WBC clients
•Provide entrepreneurship and business management training and skills to support women entrepreneurs, minority, and underserved business owners
•Coordinate marketing efforts to effectively identify, attract and recruit new participants to the WBC
•Provide connections to other resource and support providers in the community, as appropriate
•Administrative and budgetary oversight
•Collaborate with the appropriate administrative offices at Alcorn State University Office of Sponsored Programs to ensure timely budgets and administrative reporting are developed and maintained, in line with federal and university policies.
•Engage in efforts to support the long-term financial sustainability of the WBC, such as the preparation and submission of grant and funding applications in coordination with Alcorn State University
•Ensure the maintenance of data collection efforts in order to provide reports and analyses about the WBC participants and performance

•Very strong communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to provide high-level coaching and business ownership guidance to others.
•Strong organizational and administrative capabilities as well as leadership and training skills
•Demonstrable attention to detail and with a care for deadlines.
•Experience with grants (applying for and managing) is highly desirable
•A self-starter who can work independently and collaboratively with different sets of stakeholders in the community and across Alcorn State University campus
•Entrepreneurial experience in start-up businesses and/or strong entrepreneurial knowledge and management skills honed in small- and growth- businesses are highly desirable

•Strong organizational, interpersonal, writing and speaking skills, and the ability to communicate effectively within a university environment are required.
•The ability to work independently in a time-sensitive environment is required.
•Demonstrated ability to work with individuals from a variety of backgrounds, including victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, or other types of trauma is required.
•Demonstrated ability to oversee and manage caseload in a manner that ensures the prompt, effective, and equitable conclusion of such matters is required.
•The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
•A professional record of successful and progressively responsible administrative experience including leadership of projects and/or major programs.
