Certified Medical Assistant - Geriatrics

SUMMARY:

Performs medical, clerical, and reception duties for the Department of Geriatrics. Provides medical assistance to physicians in the examination and treatment of patients.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs pre-visit activities such as mailing of information packets to patients, collection of information from patients.
  • Checks patients in through IDX system; verifies demographics and insurance information and makes any corrections or additions; scans patient's insurance card; collects appropriate copays; issues and retrieves referrals as appropriate.
  • Batches patient visit activity and prepares payments for deposit.
  • Schedules patient appointments for office visits through IDX system; verifies patient insurance benefits and obtains pre-certification (if needed) for services to be provided.
  • Performs check out tasks such as follow up appointment scheduling and delivery of information and orders to patients.
  • Obtains referrals for patients as requested.
  • Rooms patients and prepares patients for visits, taking history, chief complaint, weight and vital signs.
  • Performs EKG's, phlebotomy, and vaccinations as requested.
  • Documents in EMR system.
  • Assists physician with patient care. Draws up medications for injections given by physician.
  • Responds to patient calls and relays to physician through the EMR system.
  • Processes new patient charts in EMR system.
  • Prepares patient charts for next day visits and performs pre-visit planning. Insures collection of all data for ACO and other quality measures prior to, during and after the visit.
  • Maintains medical waste logs and keeps abreast of current regulations.
  • Prepares exam room for patient visits.
  • Scans and routes documents, as appropriate, into patients' electronic charts.
  • Maintains stock of sample medications, office and medical supply inventory. Stocks exam rooms and keeps exam rooms clean and orderly. Orders injectables and vaccines. Maintains and cleans medical equipment as required.
  • Sorts and distributes incoming mail and faxes to appropriate destination.
  • Prepares forms and letters as requested.
  • Communicates with and responds to the Department's various staff, offices, and nursing facilities.
  • Opens and closes offices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience: Certification from an accredited medical assistant program is required. Knowledge of computers is required. At least one year of related experience in a medical office setting. Must have experience using electronic medical records and be able to drive to satellite offices. Experience in a Geriatric practice preferred. Evening and weekend hours not currently required. The ability to work independently, excellent communication skills, organizational skills and flexibility are required.
