Assistant Professor of Radiation Oncology, Clinician-Educator Track for Medical Physics
Perelman School of Medicine - Radiation Oncology

Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Oct 13, 2020
Deadline: Oct 13, 2022 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time

The Department of Radiation Oncology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor position in the non-tenure clinician educator track. Expertise is required in the specific area of Medical Physics. ABR board eligibility in therapeutic radiological physics is required and ABR board certification is preferred or expected within the first two years. Recent graduates and current senior residents are encouraged to apply. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent degree.

Teaching responsibilities may include the teaching and training of radiation oncology residents, medical physics residents, medical physics graduate students, etc.

Clinical responsibilities may include supporting a full range of clinical physics activities, such as proton therapy, linac-based radiation therapy, brachytherapy, etc. at the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.

Research or scholarship responsibilities may include actively and independently contributing to departmental research. The department has a range of innovative research projects, which include but not limit to proton and x-ray FLASH therapy, real-time adaptive radiotherapy, motion management, auto-planning, and robustness optimization, etc. With increasing needs in automation and clinical decision support, candidates with clinical experience in implementing artificial intelligence or machine learning algorithms into clinical practice will be preferred. The position is not a pure research position; demonstration of clinical translation of research/new technology is essential. Evidence of scholarship is required in the Clinician-Educator track.

The Radiation Oncology clinic, located in the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine, includes five Varian linacs (3 Truebeams, 2 Halcyons), a Varian HDR unit installed alongside a Varian Acuity Simulator, two Siemens dual-energy CT simulators, a Siemens wide-bore MRI unit, and a Philips wide bore PET/CT unit. We provide a full range of radiation oncology services (IMRT, brachytherapy, TBI, SRS, and SBRT) and have an active development program in all aspects of radiotherapy physics. We are also active in photodynamic therapy research. The clinic has a hub-and-spoke model for deploying new clinical technologies across 15 network sites. The Roberts Proton Therapy Center opened in 2009 and is integrated with the photon therapy clinic. It houses the largest proton therapy facility in the USA, comprising four gantry treatment rooms, one fixed beam room, and a dedicated research room. The existing facility has been fully upgraded to the latest pencil beam scanning technology with in-room CBCT and motion management capabilities. Several single-room proton treatment centers are planned at Penn Network facilities, which will open in 2021. This position will start on July 1, 2021.

We seek candidates who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense. The University of Pennsylvania is an EOE. Minorities/Women/Individuals with disabilities/protected veterans are encouraged to apply.
