It is the mission of the Department of Pediatrics, East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, to provide exemplary medical education/training of physicians in pediatric medicine at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Additionally, it is the mission of the department to provide model comprehensive primary and consultative subspecialty care to children of eastern North Carolina, to advance scientific knowledge through basic and clinical research, and to provide continuing medical education opportunities for physicians in the region.

Job Duties

The purpose of this position is to provide nursing support to the Ambulatory Pediatric Clinics at the Pediatric Specialty Clinic. The responsibilities will include providing direct patient care, nursing support, technical assistance, assisting physicians with some procedures, maintaining a safe environment, and facilitating the flow of clinical activities. The individual in this position will perform a variety of tasks with some detail, have general understanding and skill in the application of work procedures. Work assignments generally involve patients in stable condition. Work includes the reinforcement of routine patient teaching and may include participation in the orientation of students and other staff of the unit, procedures, and/or the function of the nursing assistant. All work is performed under the direct supervision of a registered nurse or physician. The candidate of choice has to possess considerable knowledge of basic medical terminology and human anatomy; the ability to understand and implement a variety of detailed instructions in the execution of complex therapeutic procedures, and the ability to make accurate physical observations of patients. The selected candidate will interact with residents, medical students, nursing students, and other learners daily to teach procedures and concepts that relate to nursing practice. The selected candidate will also serve as an educator for the patient population and their families regarding preventative health measures, disease, and disease management. Currently, hours of clinic operation are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday, with a rotating scheduled late day to cover patient care. Current basic CPR certification is preferred.

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

Minimum Education/Experience

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require registration as a Nurse Aide by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, or certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA.)

This position requires successful completion of North Carolina approved NA II course and be able to perform NA II tasks.

Certification in Basic Life Support is required prior to completion of general orientation.

License or Certification required by statute or regulation

Six months of pediatric related experience and outpatient clinical experience.
