The University of Florida’s School of Landscape Architecture and Planning, and the Department of Landscape Architecture seeks a visionary leader and educator who is committed to advancing issues of equity, diversity and inclusion to serve as Director of the School and Chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture.

Our mission is to prepare future practitioners and scholars committed to advancing the efficacy, impact, and knowledge of the disciplines of landscape architecture and planning, to engage in research and scholarship that enhances the understanding and practice of the profession while addressing societal challenges, and to provide service to the communities of our state, region and abroad.

The position is a twelve-month tenure accruing appointment and is available from July 1st, 2022.

The School and Department

The School benefits from a collaborative environment between the Departments of Landscape Architecture (LAE), and Urban and Regional Planning (URP). The School is housed in UF’s College of Design, Construction and Planning (DCP), benefitting from a unique association with other allied design disciplines in the College including Architecture, Construction Management, Historic Preservation, Interior Design, and Sustainability. The School’s mission is further supported by interdisciplinary research pursued by integrative research centers including the College’s Institute for Built Environment Resilience (FIBER) and the University’s Water Institute and Florida Climate Institute.

This is a pivotal and exciting moment for the profession and the Department of Landscape Architecture at UF. Established in 1933, the Department offers programs leading to a professionally-accredited Masters of Landscape Architecture (MLA), a College level PhD with a concentration in Landscape Architecture, and the professionally-accredited Bachelor of Landscape Architecture program (BLA), the only accredited undergraduate program in landscape architecture in the State of Florida.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:  

• Terminal degree in landscape architecture or a related field represented in the College. Common examples include Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) and Master of Arts in Landscape Arch (MA LA) and Master of Science in Landscape Arch (MS LA) when combined with an accredited Bachelor of Landscape Arch (BLA) degree
• Distinguished record in teaching, research or creative scholarship, and service, sufficient to merit tenure upon hire at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor
• Academic administrative experience including management of budgets, personnel, curriculum at undergraduate or graduate levels
• Understanding of the importance of fundraising
• demonstrated record of:

o     Advancing the knowledge of landscape architecture and its evolving role in society and effectively communicating its value within government, industry, and academic sectors

o     Commitment to undergraduate and graduate education, engagement with students and promotion of student success

o     Commitment to faculty development and mentoring

o     Commitment to advancing issues of equity, diversity and inclusion

 

Desired Qualifications:

• Ph.D. or licensure in landscape architecture or a related field represented in the College
• Experience with professional program accreditation at undergraduate or graduate levels
• Experience establishing and implementing a strategic plan with clear goals and outcomes
• Experience working with intercollegiate, interdisciplinary, and international partnerships and programs
• Experience with attracting, developing, and retaining outstanding faculty and staff
• Experience in fundraising and working with donors
• Experience working with advisory boards and maintaining relationships with alumni
• Experience with extramural funding for research or funding that supports creative scholarship
• Experience in leading and/or actively participating in the field’s professional and academic organizations
