Position Description:
  • Command Officer for the operations of the Community Services Division. Responsible for the administrative planning and coordination of all community services/public relation activities and personnel assigned to the Division. Interview and select personnel; develop and implement operational procedures; interpret new laws, ordinances, rules and regulations. Direct the enforcement department policies, procedures and regulations; evaluate the work of subordinate personnel an initiate personnel action when necessary; maintain discipline; observe personnel in the field; accompany them on programs, advising and assist with programs as needed. Review all unit activities through personnel conferences and other written report prepared by subordinate officers; approve and process all reports to proper units/persons; report an any significant occurrences to superiors; assist in the investigations and other law enforcement functions as needed; receive complaints and conduct internal reviews as needed. Captain’s positions at UFPD are equivalent positions and the Chief of Police can assign a Captain to any Captain’s position within the department.

  • Coordinate news release for public function, radio and television programs to promote crime prevention activities.
  • Serves as police/community liaison. Responsible for developing community support in addressing concerns and complaints registered/identified in the area of crime committed against person. Plan and coordinate those activities with various campus community organizations (i.e. Student Affairs/Services Division of Housing Student Government Officials, UPD Office of Victim Services, Physical Plant Division and other community resources).
  • Liaison with university officials, local law enforcement agencies and other community services in planning, implementation and participation in community relation activities (i.e. orientation programs for new UF student and parents, crime prevention exhibits on campus, local shopping centers, family villages, resident halls and UF Laboratory School).
  • Receive crime analysis reports from the Office of Professional Standards; directs and determine appropriate crime prevention strategies/programs for recommendations to proper official/agencies.
  • Develop and submit for approval operational budgets for Community Services Division. Approve Personnel appointment, purchase of equipment and supplies; prepare annual budget expenditure report and submit and appropriate officials.
  • Coordinate and maintain department’s website.
  • Liaison with other state and national university police department crime prevention/community services units (i.e. exchange knowledge and various methods used to address common problems, uses of equipment, brochures, films, etc.). Liaison with Statewide Florida Crime Prevention Program, Attorney General’s Office to inform and make recommendations concerning crime related problems relative to the University community.
  • Develop and maintain the department’s informational resources center (i.e. videos, posters, brochures, statistics, engraving equipment, decals, etc.); relative to crime prevention methods and community involvement; assist in the researching, writing, designing and acquisition of printed and online materials to be made available to the public.
  • Review, evaluate and approve all subordinate’s performance evaluations, time records, (sick, vacation, compensatory time, etc.); work schedules, training/retraining needs.
  • Pursues, apprehends, and arrest law violators or suspected law violators.
  • Direct and coordinate computer programs for Community Services activities.
  • Serves on various departmental, campus and community committees. Attends special schools, training classes and seminars. Appearance and testimony in judicial proceedings; monitors appearance and testimony of assigned subordinates in judicial proceedings. Miscellaneous related duties.
  • This position is designated as an Essential Employee. Essential employees provide vital support to the University of Florida and are subject to recall to work when deemed necessary by the Chief of Police/designee. Recall to work typically happens due to an emergency, disaster or special event that may coincide with the official suspension of classes and/or closing of offices.

$86,775.00 - $106,272.21 annually

Lower reference point: $78,900 Midpoint: $106,400 Upper reference point: $133,900

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelors and five years of sworn law enforcement or sworn investigative experience. Must meet the requirements of Chapter 943, Florida Statutes.

Preferred Qualifications:

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: A Master’s Degree in an appropriate area and two years of experience at the rank of lieutenant or higher at an equivalent or larger sized agency. Graduate of the FBI National Academy and/or the Southern Police Institute Administrative Officers Course.

KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of law enforcement principle techniques. Knowledge of criminal justice system; knowledge, ability and skill in operating motor vehicles and other police equipment; knowledge; ability, and skills in the use of restraining devices and firearms;

ABILITIES: Ability to work in dangerous stressful situations. Ability to deal with individuals and critical situations in an effective manner; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to understand and apply critical laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures; ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to describe facts and events accurately; ability to prepare reports; ability to effectively interview suspects, complainants and witnesses; ability to interview and select personnel, ability to evaluate and counsel personnel.

SKILLS: Requires strong writing ability, organizational skills, and ability to work independently, knowledge of working media; strong public speaking skills.

Must be capable of meeting physical requirements for law enforcement officers as specified by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
