Preferred QualificationsPosition Summary

This position will work with a Principal Investigator to conduct research in chemical oceanography for a 12-month period and is renewable on an annual basis contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of research funding. Responsibilities will include performing chemical analysis on aerosol samples with a focus on trace element geochemistry. Specifically, the professional will be responsible for the preparation of research materials (e.g. sample filters, plasticware, acids, and reagents), coordinating shipment to field sites in Hawaii, and subsequent chemical analysis on the Perkin Elmer Nexion 300D quadrupole ICP-mass spectrometer at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Degree from an accredited college or university in Oceanography or related discipline.

Experience working in a trace metal oceanographic research laboratory.

Knowledge of complex laboratory skills.

Knowledge of GEOTRACES program sampling protocols.

Knowledge of the Perkin Elmer Nexion 300D quadrupole ICP-mass spectrometer integrated with the Elemental Scientific Inc. SeaFAST S2 sample introduction system.

Ability to participate in sea-going activities related to oceanographic data collection for up to three weeks at a time.

Ability to understand and interpret scientific information (data and technical manuals).

Ability to prepare manuscripts, reports, and grant proposals.

Ability to work independently.

Support the daily operation of the laboratory including ordering and tracking materials and supply inventories, laboratory safety, and laboratory waste management. Perform a range of technical chemical analyses; data and record keeping and complex data analysis.
