Position Summary

You must be a current employee of The University of Georgia to apply for this position.

The Director of the Law Library is responsible for overseeing all aspects of library operation including administration of strategic planning, hiring, supervision of library staff, collection development, budgeting and implementing technology to support library services. The Director reports directly to the Dean of the Law School. The Director should have knowledge of emerging technologies in their application to libraries. As Director, leadership skills in a collaborative environment, listening skills, and clear communication skills will enable the successful completion of initiatives.

Additional Requirements

A J.D. and a master’s degree in library or information science from an accredited school. Degrees must be completed prior to the candidate’s starting date of employment.

Leadership and Administration

Executes vision and strategies to ensure that library services support the mission and initiatives of the law school. Responsible for short and long-range planning and the overall administration of the library. Engages in strategic planning, resource development, and assessment of the law library operations. Fosters a creative, team-oriented work environment. Serves as a member of the law school’s senior administrative team.

Instruction

Responsible for teaching for-credit legal research instruction including 1L legal research, advanced legal research, and specialized legal research courses. Offer legal research instruction such as class presentations, informal training, library tours, or continuing legal education seminars.

Management

Oversight and responsibility for the supervision of the library staff including recruitment and hiring. Conduct annual performance evaluations for direct reports and oversight of all staff evaluations. Actively encourage and enable the professional growth of all library staff to maximize their own individual potential. Recommends promotions of library faculty. Recommends merit salary increases. Ensures that library personnel practices comply with applicable UGA policies and legal requirements. Establishes programs and processes to promote effective recruitment, selection, orientation, retention, performance management, and training for library staff.

Financial

Develops and administers the law library’s budget. Ensures purchases are within budget and meet end user’s needs. Responsible for oversight of collection development and preservation plans. Evaluates and negotiates with vendors and providers to leverage and maximize budget resources. Ensures compliance with legal requirements and UGA financial policies.

Facilities Management

Supervises maintenance of library building, equipment, and furnishings. Works with UGA Facilities Management on issues of safety, maintenance, and housekeeping. Coordinates the library emergency response planning. Responsible for library space planning, renovation, and construction.

Professional, Scholarly, and Service Activities

Participate in professional, scholarly and service activities. Maintain an extensive knowledge of emerging library and legal education trends. Participates and leads law school and university committees as appointed. Works with local, national, or international libraries on broad collaborative initiatives.
