Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

Fayetteville State University’s Office of Access & Student Success encourages and assists families in the Sandhills Region of North Carolina, who are traditionally under-represented in post-secondary education with preparation for, entry into and completion of a post-secondary degree.

The TRIO Student Support Services Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education for the purpose of providing structured academic support activities to low-income and first-generation college students. The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention and graduation rates. The services provided create opportunities for academic development, assist students with basic college requirements, and motivate students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education.

Description of Work Continued:

Primary Purpose of the Position:

The primary purpose of the Retention Specialist is to support low-income and first-generation students at Fayetteville State University with structured academic support such as coaching, advisement and instruction to improve successful course completion, retention, graduation.

Duties and Responsibilities:

40%-Student Support Services – Develop and implement educational interventions to support low-income/first-generation with successful course completion, retention and graduation; develop action plans for students who and receive DFW’s through FSU’s early alerts; monitor, coach and provide support to students on academic probation;

Provide one-on-one and in a small group to support student success with course completion. Develop and conduct non-cognitive development workshops (i.e., study skills, test-taking skills, note-taking skills, critical thinking, student success software, course success, etc.).

30%-Tutor Coordination – Coordinate academic tutoring for Student Support Services; supervise tutors; assist with coordination of training all tutors; hold monthly meetings with tutors; coordinate tutorial session assignments for tutor and participants; assist director with recruiting qualified tutors to meet the needs of participants; complete evaluation of tutors; maintain accurate documentation tutoring services and progress of participants; coordinate virtual and face-to-face tutoring services; coordinate with university services to support SSS participants; and make referrals for on/off campus support for students that need additional support outside of the scope of SSS.

15%-Student Needs Assessment/Record Management – Complete comprehensive individual needs assessments and develop individual academic plans; review grades and transcripts; maintain files on participants; track services using Blumen database and university student success software; monitor satisfactory academic progress; administer pre and post-tests; conduct Early Warning alerts; submit monthly reports/quarterly reports.

10%-University Collaboration – Attend faculty meetings and student orientation sessions to inform of project goals, objectives, services, and eligibility requirements in order to assist in the identification of eligible students. Communicate with faculty members on the academic progress of students; make referrals to other student services, identify faculty and staff to assist with tutoring and conduct academic workshops. Attend departmental meetings. Serve on university, regional, state and national committees. Make referrals for on campus and off campus resources to support program participants.

5%-High Impact Practices –Assist with the development and implementation of research-based practices/services to increase student engagement (i.e., ePortfolios; career awareness workshops; connections to internships).

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

A Master’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Two or more years of experience with federal TRIO programs, academic support programs, tutor coordination, retention services, advising or similar programs serving students traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

· One year or more of experience advising/counseling/coaching in academic planning and student success.

· At least one year of experience supervising staff and/or college student workers

· Experience in case management, such as documenting and tracking services in a database and/or participant file.

Knowledge skills and abilities:Preferred Qualifications:

A Master’s degree in science, engineering, business, math, education, public administration, social science, or related field from an accredited college/university
