Generally, Monday through Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm (9:00am – 6:00). Due to the nature of the position, may be required to work outside of normal business hours based on the needs of the department.

The purpose of the Director of Nursing Services is to provide overall leadership to the nursing services within Primary Care and Allergy, Immunization and Travel (AIT) and the Quality Improvement Program. Develops a service line that achieves a high level of customer satisfaction with emphasis on customer service and highest standards of quality and innovation. The incumbent assumes primary responsibility for supervision and oversight of patient care, customer service, programs, projects, activities, and personnel. Plans, develops and implements policies and procedures. Participates in the monitoring of care through a quality assurance program that encourages self-evaluation, and Peer Review. Ensures that an effective infection control program is maintained to promote the health and safety of patients, staff, and visitors and meets accreditation guidelines. Ensures the ongoing updates and improvements to the electronic health record for nursing services. Prepares the annual budget for areas of responsibility. Produces monthly budget variance analyses. Monitors staffing levels to ensure staffing is consistent with demand and staffing philosophy. Ensures compliance with local, state and federal rules, regulations, certification and accreditation programs.

Minimum Qualifications (Classified and Unclassified positions)

Master’s degree from accredited school of nursing and 6 years supervisory or management experience. Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing.
CPR, ACLS and a valid license (or eligible) approved by the South Carolina Board of Nursing required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience as a director of nursing and/or 3 years’ experience as a charge nurse or a similar leadership position in a health care setting. Experience with assessing workflow and adapting efficiencies within the electronic health record to streamline processes and evaluate outcomes. Demonstrated experience and success implementing quality initiatives and moving an organization to embrace comprehensive improvement in outcomes, patient safety, etc. Evidence of potential for building and leading a substantial department.


Knowledge of the principles and practices of professional nursing; of professional nursing theory and ethics; and other allied health professions (ie. Medical Assistants) and of supervisory principles and practices. Knowledge of and dedication for the principles of a patient centered medical home and how quality healthcare contributes to students’ academic success. Ability to align clinical departments to form a collaborative, cohesive, and efficient team. Skills to develop and manage several budgets and produce monthly budget variance analysis. Ability to design and conduct training programs for nursing and allied health staff. Manage and supervise the work of others, directly and through department managers. Appraise performance, counsel and train employees, directly and through supervisors; develop and implement disciplinary actions if necessary. Must have the ability to deal tactfully, positively, and productively with patients, staff, parents, and University administrators. Demonstrated ability to work with other professionals collaboratively to set and achieve goals.
