The Marsico Lung Institute at UNC is actively involved in projects generally designed to define the pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis and other pulmonary disorders and to understand the functions of the respiratory epithelium. The primary purpose of this position is in designing, executing, interpreting, and reporting scientific experiments to achieve specific goals as directed in the PI’s Laboratory. Scientific techniques include, but are not limited to human cell culture, molecular biology, cell biology, biochemistry, and a good command of general laboratory procedures. A partial component of this position is general laboratory management including participation in daily operations including ordering supplies, general record keeping, and compliance with health and safety procedures.

Educational Requirements

Ph.D. degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics.

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate must have a track record of impactful scientific contributions. Extensive experimental experience in the area of cell biology, molecular biology and biochemistry. The candidate must be familiar with and capable of performing a wide variety of laboratory procedures. Can follow detailed protocols precisely and be able to adapt protocols using subject matter expertise. Demonstrates broad scientific and technical assay development expertise in the areas of molecular biology (including DNA/RNA isolation and quantitation, cloning, primer design, and quantitative PCR), biochemistry (Western blot, ELISA, immunoprecipitation) and cell biology (including culture of cell lines and primary cells, transfections and transductions, immunofluorescent staining and cell imaging) is required. Demonstrated ability to design and execute experiments, solve problems independently, troubleshoot methods, analyze and interpret data and present results is required. The applicant should also be able to follow detailed standard operating procedures (SOPs), possess outstanding communication skills including manuscript preparation, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to collaborate with scientists across other disciplines.
