The School of Journalism and Media in the College of Communication and Information at the University of Kentucky invites applications for a full-time lecturer position with an anticipated start date of Jan. 1, 2021. The lecturer will teach a variety of undergraduate courses across the curriculum, including sports journalism/media.
The successful candidate must have both professional journalism experience and teaching experience at the collegiate level. The successful candidate must have a master’s degree in journalism or a related field with five years of professional experience. Special consideration will be given to candidates who been recognized by their peers as a leader in sports journalism and reporting. The committee seeks applications from candidates who have the ability to foster a learning environment inclusive to a diverse student body. Evidence of teaching excellence and course development also is a plus.
Lecturers in the College of Communication and Information teach four classes per semester, although the teaching load may be reduced with significant service expectations. This is a nine-month academic appointment for one academic year. The position is eligible for renewal depending on the needs of the School. The lecturer will teach sports-related courses in addition to introductory courses, journalism law, journalism history, reporting and editing courses. This position will teach in various modalities (fully online, hybrid and in person).

The School of Journalism and Media is recognized for its accomplishments in academic scholarship and professional areas. The School offers BA and BS degrees in journalism (print/multimedia, broadcast/multimedia) and media arts and studies. Students learn first-hand working with campus partners, including the award-winning Kentucky Kernel newspaper, KRNL Lifestyle and Fashion magazine, the Year in Photos, WRFL, WUKY. The School produces the Student News Network, an award-winning student newscast. The School also promotes the free flow of information through its Scripps Howard First Amendment Center. Since 1981, the School has been the home of the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame. The Institute for Rural Journalism and Community Issues also operates within the School.
The College of Communication and Information is composed of two schools (The School of Journalism and Media, School of Information Science), two departments (Department of Communication, Department of Integrated Strategic Communication) and an interdisciplinary graduate program. Nearly 1,700 undergraduate majors and 350 graduate students are led by more than 80 full-time faculty, who also teach in the university’s core curriculum and serve students perusing minors and certificates in the College. The College also houses UK’s independent student newspaper, the Kentucky Kernel, and the defending national champion Intercollegiate Debate Team.
