Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs

The University of Wyoming invites nominations and applications for a strategic and visionary leader to serve as its next Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs (Provost).  The university, state and region seek a dynamic, strategic and visionary leader who will inspire academic excellence, innovative ideas and play an instrumental role in leading Wyoming’s university.  Working closely with the newly appointed President Edward Seidel, a leader in interdisciplinary research and education, computing and big data as well as economic development, the successful candidate will join a leadership team poised at a unique moment in time to vision and execute a best of class 21st century land-grant University with the goals and aspirations to rise to ever-greater distinction in designated pillars of excellence.

UW plays a key role in the state's economy, and its research attracts national and international attention.

The State of Wyoming invests strongly in higher education, providing the highest amount of state support per student in the nation. Consequently, UW has the lowest undergraduate tuition among the nation's public doctoral universities. The University also benefits from a $500 million endowed student scholarship program, a robust capital construction budget, an active and successful foundation with an endowment of over $600M, a publicly and privately supported endowed faculty program, and state funding for UW's several areas of academic excellence.

The University community is working collaboratively to help the University reinforce and strengthen its reputation as it adapts to changing economic factors in the state and beyond. The Provost shall initiate, organize, or direct such actions as are necessary and appropriate to assure that academic program needs and standards are established and implemented by appropriate units and officers of the University, including accreditation.

The Provost will consult with and advise the President on the recommendations of the heads of the various academic units concerning organization, development of programs, appointment of academic personnel, promotions, leaves of absence, salaries.

The Provost will serve as a strong leader and change agent who can motivate diverse stakeholders across the institution in achieving its academic objectives. This position will provide leadership and coordination in building holistic and academic services, policies, and protocols that are consistent with the goals, mission, and resources of the University.

The successful candidate will possess an earned doctorate or other terminal degree from an accredited institution, as well as a distinguished record of scholarship, teaching, and strategic administrative leadership in higher education as well as a thorough knowledge of academic administration and the programs of a large complex university.

Additionally, the Provost and Senior Vice President should possess the following qualities:

  • Qualifications necessary for appointment at a faculty rank in one of the University’s academic departments;
  • A deep understanding and appreciation of the land-grant mission of the institution;
  • An ability to build a shared vision that promotes academic excellence through inspirational leadership and exceptional management skills;
  • An ability to cultivate a community of learning energized by collaborative work among students, faculty, staff and external partners;
  • An understanding of current and emerging issues in higher education;
  • An appreciation of, and commitment to, shared governance, including open and transparent communication;
  • Experience in working collegially with diverse internal and external constituencies;
  • Demonstrated commitment to nurture an environment that values and manifests diversity, equity, internationalization, free expression, academic freedom, personal integrity, mutual respect and inclusive excellence at all levels;
  • A demonstrated commitment to student success at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, graduating students who have experienced the frontiers of scholarship and creative activity and who are prepared for the complexities of an interdependent world;
  • Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills;
  • A commitment to participating in an active culture of raising financial support for the University of Wyoming, through private support, public and corporate partnerships, and solicitation of research and grant dollars.

The Search Committee invites nominations, applications (letter of interest, resume/CV, and the names and contact information of five or more references), or expressions of interest to be submitted to the search firm assisting the University.
