Full-Time, Temporary, Non-Exempt, Hourly, Support Staff Appointment

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide general cleaning and maintenance of assigned areas, complete/compose work orders, and accomplish project work as directed
  • Give informational assistance, promote good public relations, and deliver exceptional customer service
  • Complete event setup and cleanup for functions
  • Pick-up trash in common areas; empty trash, recycling bins, haul trash to dumpster
  • Vacuum all traffic areas and other surfaces as necessary
  • Clean and maintain high visibility and first impression areas
  • Walk through facility and pick up, spot clean as needed, respond to custodial requests
  • Clean and disinfect all rest rooms; sweep and mop floors, refill dispensers; turn out lights and secure areas
  • Assist with maintaining inventory of custodial equipment, schedule service repairs as needed
  • Trouble shoot simple building system and equipment issues and request appropriate assistance
  • Provide basic audio-visual support
  • Monitor security systems, equipment, and alarms
  • Deal with various levels of incidents as necessary, including first response in an emergency, administering First Aid or CPR
  • Support emergency response/cleanup of biohazards, follow bloodborne pathogen protocols
  • Provide support of snow removal during and after storms
  • Assist with Universal Waste Management Program and Colby sustainability initiatives
  • Comply with all safety rules, OSHA regulations
  • Participate in on-the-job training
  • Represent the department on committees as required
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions
  • Enforce College policies and complete necessary reports and paperwork
  • Maintain an alertness for suspicious activities
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; professional coursework or post-secondary education are a plus
  • Proven self-starter with excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills
  • Ability to follow all safety rules and procedures is required
  • Previous custodial experience required; building maintenance experience desired
  • Must be able to work independently, exercise judgment, and manage projects with minimal supervision as well as to adjust as new projects are assigned
  • Attention to detail, dependability, and initiative required
  • Additional training, certifications, or related experience in First Aid, CPR and AED (required within first 6 months), First Responders, and Conflict Resolution preferred
  • Must present a neat, clean, and professional image
  • Well-developed public relations skills able to perform duties in a flexible, non-confrontational environment and utilize diplomacy and tact dealing with sensitive situations
  • Ability to make an impact through work as a member of a team and diverse community

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

Reporting to the custodial supervisor, this position has high visibility and significant interactions with faculty, staff, students, community members, and other outside constituencies.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Hours are 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. or 2 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. working off campus at the Lockwood Hotel. General indoor and outdoor campus environment. Position involves frequent movement, including walking, standing, bending, twisting, shoveling, reaching, and lifting. Must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. The position requires a pre-employment physical.
