Your Opportunity:

The Continuing Professional Development (CPD) unit is one of the world’s largest providers of continuing education and professional development programming for physicians and other health professionals. CPD facilitates and supports the development of a full range of specialized medical education programs. Working with program directors and conference chairs from across the Faculty of Medicine, CPD accredits close to 400 programs and conferences per year that attract over 45,000 learners from across Canada and internationally.

As Associate Director, CPD Conference Management, you will lead a team of planning professionals who are responsible for managing a portfolio of 120 medical education programs and conferences that attract over 10,000 attendees annually. You will apply your extensive industry experience in full-cycle conference management to ensure high quality program delivery, develop client relations and retention strategies, oversee individual conference budgets totaling $14,000,000, and utilize technology to improve efficiency. Your proven track record of building and mentoring high performing teams and embracing innovation will help us shape the future of our continuing professional development programs and conferences.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing the development, delivery and evaluation of program and conferences including: event specific budget management and reconciliation, facilities contracting, speaker support, registration process, evaluation processes, audiovisual requirements, e-learning options, communications, and accreditation and commercial support standards
  • Managing the work-flow of staff in a deadline-driven environment, and providing advice and direction on issues relating to design, marketing, registration, budgeting, and accreditation and commercial support standards of continuing education events
  • Maximizing revenue streams through providing recommendations on program pricing, procurement and cost containment
  • Advising on and review all contracts ensuring that terms and conditions are in the best interest of CPD and the client

Essential Qualifications:

  • University degree or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum five years’ related experience preferably in a university or health care environment
  • Proven full-cycle industry experience with significant results, leading large, high-profile conferences
  • Experience sourcing and implementing digital event technologies, and an understanding of information systems innovations as applied to administration and e-learning functions
  • In-depth experience in hotel and convention space sourcing, negotiations and contracting
  • Experience developing and leading high functioning teams, including the ability to engage and motivate staff
  • Experience developing marketing strategies and custom plans that are national and international in scope
  • Experience with sponsorship solicitation and sponsor relationship management
  • Current knowledge of relevant issues and trends affecting event management and continuing professional development and continuing medical education
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, strong problem solving and ability to mobilize and maintain effective event management work groups
  • Demonstrated strategic, organizational and planning skills
  • Strong analytical skills with emphasis on ROI analysis
  • Strong consulting skills with the ability to quickly assimilate business needs and effectively advise and influence partners and senior leadership
  • Advanced sales and negotiation skills
  • Highly professional and energetic customer service orientation with an awareness of and sensitivity to the client base
