     The Division of GI, Trauma and Endocrine Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado is pleased to announce the development of a Fellowship in Minimally Invasive Surgery. This unaccredited program is one-year in length. The program is offered to fully-trained and board eligible general surgeons who desire to further develop their technical skills and surgical judgement in performing a vast spectrum of gastrointestinal and abdominal wall reconstruction operations.


Clinical Training Program

The clinical training throughout the year is divided into one-month rotations at the University of Colorado Hospital. The fellow will work with 2 faculty members who specialize in minimally invasive surgery. Fellows are responsible for preoperative and postoperative patient care and they will perform surgical procedures under the direction of an attending surgeon. The fellow will also participate in the outpatient clinics, patient rounds, lectures, seminars, journal club and research conferences. The fellow will also be responsible for helping to supervise and teach residents and medical students.


Education
There are department-wide and service-specific conferences that enhance both clinical and research activities. There is a weekly departmental Grand Rounds. The Division of GI, Trauma & Endocrine Surgery also has regular case conference, research conference and monthly M&M meetings. Fellows have access to all conferences within the University.


Research
Research interests will be discussed with the fellow prior to the beginning of the fellowship with the hope that the fellow will be prepared to begin their research project soon after they start the program. It is expected that the fellow will complete at least one research project and submit for publication during the program.

QualificationsMinimum qualifications: 

  • Candidates must be graduates of a recognized medical school and have completed a general surgery residency training program.
  • Selected candidates must qualify for, and obtain, a training or full license to practice medicine from the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies, in accordance with its requirements.
