The American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​The Faculty of Medicine at the American University of Beirut is the leading internationally accredited medical education and research institution in Lebanon and the Middle East. The Faculty of Medicine is known for delivering educational and training programs in medicine and medical research, responsive to the globally evolving needs in academic medicine and patient care. ​Since its establishment in 1867, the Faculty of Medicine at AUB is the oldest and finest in the MENA region and has trained generations of medical students and physicians (over 4,000 to date). Reporting directly to the President and academically to the Provost, the Dean is the responsible senior academic, the executive head of the Faculty of Medicine and a member of AUB’s senior leadership team. The Dean provides strategic vision and operational leadership, and is expected to implement the highest standards of clinical quality, excellence in teaching, academic development and research. The Dean will also define and develop enhanced partnerships  within the Faculty of Medicine and inter-professionally with nursing and allied healthcare professionals. Candidates must have an MD degree with a distinguished record of accomplishments commensurate with the appointment to the rank of tenured full professor; an outstanding record as scholar, teacher and administrator; capacity to advance the faculty’s academic mission and interests within and outside the university; commitment to recruiting and retaining high quality faculty and students; and the capacity to engage with multiple constituencies including students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Experience with a faculty practice plan is essential.

Organization

Founded in 1866, the American University of Beirut bases its educational philosophy, standards, and practices on the American liberal arts model of higher education. A teaching-centered research university, AUB has around 700 instructional faculty and a student body of around 8,000 students. The University encourages freedom of thought and expression and seeks to graduate men and women committed to creative and critical thinking, life-long learning, personal integrity, civic responsibility, and leadership.

The University, which was granted institutional accreditation in June 2004 by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools in the United States and reaffirmed in June 2009, includes six faculties: Agricultural and Food Sciences, Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Architecture, Health Sciences, Medicine (which includes the Rafic Hariri School of Nursing), and the Suliman S. Olayan School of Business.

AUB currently offers more than 120 programs leading to the bachelor's, master's, MD, and PhD degrees. The University became coeducational in 1922; its student body is 50 percent male and 50 percent female. The language of instruction is English (except for courses in the Arabic Department and other language courses). The student faculty ratio is 13 to 1.
