Departmental Overview

The intellectual heart of UC Berkeley, the College of Letters & Science (L&S) is the largest of the university's 14 colleges and schools and the most prestigious teaching and research unit in the UC system. L&S encompasses more than half of the campus's faculty, three-quarters of its undergraduate students, and half of its Ph.D. candidates.

L&S takes students on the academic adventure of a lifetime by exposing them to a vibrant, broad-based liberal arts education at the highest level of excellence. Our students engage in dialogue with the world's best teachers and its most distinguished researchers and scholars. Together they participate in projects at the forefront of science, solve pressing social problems, create art, explore diverse values and cultures, and seek answers to the biggest questions of our times.

L&S offers students a choice of more than 80 departmental majors (link is external) as well as vast opportunities to study and conduct research both within and outside of the traditional disciplines. We are seeking a dynamic individual to help us sustain and surpass increasing fundraising and donor engagement suc-cess. A proven track record is essential, as is a willingness to work collaboratively with Berkeley faculty, with colleagues across the campus, and particularly with an energetic and ambitious academic dean. Candidates must bring a history of building strong relationships with donors and an instinct to go the extra mile to engage new donors and to help existing supporters deepen their relationship with the College in ways that are meaningful and motivating.

Responsibilities
  • Serves as an expert development professional in the area of major/principal gifts in the Division of Arts & Humanities which has an environment that includes donors capable of making very significant contributions to the campus.
  • Collaborates closely with the dean of the Division as part of his/her leadership team, on direct engagement with donors and prospect.
  • Manage a portfolio of 75-100 major gift donor prospects that include the most influential, complex or highest rated donors, typically with the capacity to give $250,000 or more.
  • Make at least 8-10 visits per month as well as significant moves that advance a relationship.
  • Qualify major gift prospects and solicit gifts directly.
  • Ensure that predetermined Division fundraising goals are met and raise at least $3M annually.
  • Analyzes needs and designs and implements strategic plans related to all facets of advancement program, including highly specialized program activities designed to maximize donor engagement within the Division.
  • Develops, creates, writes, implements, and evaluates individualized plans and strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major gifts and gift planning (strategies typically require a high degree of innovation).
  • Collaborates with dean to identify funding opportunities and ensures that marketing plans fulfill immediate needs as well as long term goals.
  • Manage a team of 3 fundraising professionals, providing mentorship and expertise towards achievement of fundraising goals and metrics.
  • Serves as resource for assigned area of expertise, interacting with prospects, donors, staff, department chairs and deans to provide information, advice and counsel regarding assigned specialized program(s).

Required Qualifications
  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in the field and expert knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor and public relations.
  • Expert ability to develop and structure complex gifts.
  • Expert knowledge of or ability to quickly learn all aspects of the campus (both university and college level), including current issues of concern for both the campus and throughout higher education generally.
  • Expert knowledge of or ability to quickly learn the campus and college's vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
  • Expert knowledge of or ability to quickly learn all applicable laws, rules, regulations, institutional policies, and knowledge of Arts & Humanities content.
  • Expert written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including advanced political acumen, and demonstrated success in establishing and maintaining good working relationships at all organizational levels
  • and with outside constituencies, including donors and volunteers.
  • Expertise in developing persuasive written materials from diverse, unstructured written and oral information
  • Ability to quickly learn or expert skill in making or persuasive and compelling presentations of campus goals/objectives and demonstrated record of securing high end gifts.
  • Expert analytical, critical thinking, problem recognition/avoidance/resolution skills.
  • Expert project/program management skills, including skill in setting and meeting program/project goals and objectives within budget and time constraints.
  • Skills to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives.
  • Expert skills in building portfolios; researching databases, identifying prospects, cultivating and developing new donors to augment/grow a portfolio.
  • Must thrive in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment while effectively executing a challenging set of major gift plans and programs.
  • Some evening and weekend hours, as well as occasional travel required.

Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
