The Department of Surgery is a clinical department within the School of Medicine with the attendant responsibility for medical education and research. The Chair of the department is also the Chief of Surgical services for the hospital. The department includes 36 full-time faculty members in the sections of: transplant surgery, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical oncology, general and bariatric surgery, and trauma and acute care surgery. It also includes clinical and basic science research labs. The 70+ employees in the department support our clinical, education and research programs.
The Department of Surgery at East Carolina University is dedicated to providing state of the art care to patients in eastern North Carolina. The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center (VMC).
The Department of Surgery is seeking an experienced Medical Assistant to work in our Outpatient Surgical Clinic.
Duties of this position include but are not limited to: Accompany patients to rooms; Acquire thorough interview/patient history; Obtain vital signs; Prepare and chaperone during examinations by the physician/health care providers; Review medications, in addition to past any new drug allergies; Review the medical record for completeness before the physician’s examination; Prepare patients for visits by doing an accurate patient assessment; Observe of any treatment and/or medication reactions, and prompt, concise verbal/written communication and recording of such findings for the physician/health care provider; Assist in scheduling patients for routine clinic visits and special procedures;
This individual will interface with patients via telephone conversations regarding medical care and responses to treatments between office visits, triage patient telephone calls, provide negative test results per-protocol of physicians, answer questions, and provide patient education as indicated. Under the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act for licensed practical nurses, medication prescription refills may be called in by this professional, following the written protocol of the prescribing Department of Surgery physicians.
Direct nursing care includes assisting providers during procedures and examinations and performing nursing skills. The Medical Assistant will provide indirect patient care within the Surgery clinics by preparing and maintaining daily cleanliness of examination rooms, autoclave equipment and instruments, as well as stocking exam rooms with sufficient patient care supplies. They will assist the nurse supervisor in maintaining inventories of medications, solutions, supplies, and equipment. This individual will also be cross-trained in various PAS (Patient Access) duties including checking in and out patients, collecting co-payments, scheduling appointments, checking insurance eligibility, work queues, referrals, and phone hub.

The ECU Brody School of Medicine is affiliated with Vidant Medical Center. Vidant Medical Center is the flagship hospital for Vidant Health and serves as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.Minimum Education/Experience
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Requires certification through the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA); or successful completion of the requirements from an accredited medical assisting program that permit eligibility to sit for a national certification exam. If not already certified, Please note that you must receive your Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) certification within 6 months from your start date for continued employment.License or Certification required by statute or regulation
