The College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is recruiting up to six outstanding tenure track faculty to deepen and expand research and teaching related to racial equity, which will occur in parallel with two searches that address historical aspects of American slavery. We seek highly talented faculty whose research and teaching will make transformative contributions to the major themes of 1) Health, Wellness, and Equity in Communities of Color and 2) Black and Indigenous Families and Communities, with a preferred emphasis on U.S. populations. Searches in the departments of Biology, Communication, Economics, Exercise and Sport Science, Psychology & Neuroscience, and Sociology will contribute to this initiative. Across these searches, we aspire to recruit faculty who are doing innovative, intersectional, and high impact work that will diversify and enhance our research, teaching, and public outreach missions.

As a part of the overarching initiative on racial equity and wellbeing across the lifespan, the Department of Psychology & Neuroscience invites applications for a tenure-track position in Developmental Psychology at the Assistant Professor level, to begin July 2021. We are particularly interested in scholars with expertise in African American/Black children, families, or communities as well as scientific perspectives that attend to multiple contexts of development and levels of analysis. Areas of specialization focusing on developmental processes within African American/Black families and communities might include (but, not limited to): development in early childhood; developmental implications of racial and social inequities; racial and cultural protective processes; the interplay between developing biological systems and environmental contexts; mechanisms of risk and resilience; health in aging; and media use and impacts.

The Department of Psychology and Neuroscience has faculty across 6 program areas (Behavioral & Integrative Neuroscience, Clinical, Cognitive, Developmental, Quantitative, and Social Psychology), providing opportunities for exciting collaboration and innovation. UNC Centers and Institutes (Institute for African American Research; Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute; Center for Health Equity Research) as well as the School of Education and Gillings School of Global Public Health provide opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration.

Educational Requirements

Applicants must have a Doctoral degree in Psychology or closely related field by the time of appointment.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful applicant will demonstrate the potential for excellence in research and extramural research support. Also, the successful candidate will have a demonstrated history of, or the potential for, contributing to mentoring and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate level.

Candidates should have a strong record of research productivity, the potential to develop an independent program of research, and a commitment to mentoring and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
