Job description


The CREATE Lab Princeton invites applicants for a Research Specialist position in computational design and machine learning. The position is associated with the project “Bringing Social Distancing to Light: Crowd Management Using AI and Interactive Floor Projection” ( ) which focuses on mitigating the impacts of COVID 19 through the simulation of pedestrian collective behaviour and the proposal of physical interventions to public spaces. The project is led by the CREATE Lab, School of Architecture Princeton (Prof. Stefana Parascho) and the Tarnita Lab, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (Prof. Corina Tarnita). During COVID-19 all work will be done in accordance with Research Resumption Plan as submitted. The work can be partially executed remotely, and will not require presence on campus for the entire duration of the project. However, during the implementation phase, periodical presence on campus (in accordance with Campus COVID-19 Regulations) will be needed.

The full time appointment is for 10 months (Nov 2020 - August 2021) with possible extension to 12 months.


The research specialist will be responsible for: a. extracting image/video data on pedestrian movement through different public spaces and developing and implementing a simulation tool for predicting people’s movement behavior under diverse circumstances.

b. developing and implementing a projection-based intervention system to safely guide pedestrians to navigate indoor spaces.

  • Bachelor degree required.
  • Ideal job candidates should have experience with or knowledge of Machine Learning methods (predictive models), they should be well versed in programming languages (Python, additional languages are a plus), and they should have interest in and a good understanding of architectural geometry.
  • Experience with custom hardware setups is a plus.
  • A background in computer science, engineering or architecture is preferred.
