Experience working as a laboratory technician or equivalent position.
Experience with materials synthesis and/or characterization equipment.
Experience with equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, field test instrumentation, and repair.
Knowledge of chemical hygiene and lab safety best practices.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates with degree in a physical science or engineering discipline, experience working in demanding technical environments (e.g. cleanroom, research center, UVH equipment cluster, equipment manufacturer), and/or demonstrated experience providing training and instruction to faculty, staff, student, or industry users in the proper operation, maintenance, and repair of scientific laboratory equipment.

Job Description

The Instrument Technician is responsible for management of sophisticated research instrumentation associated with Texas State University’s shared research areas. The technician will also supervise general laboratory maintenance, ensure proper operation of instrumentation, carry out installation and training on new equipment and procedures, and enforce laboratory safety protocols to facilitate research and education for Texas State University faculty, staff, student, and external users.

Job Duties

Assist in operation of shared research laboratories and equipment management to facilitate research and instruction in areas including but not limited to materials synthesis, characterization and device fabrication.
Work in team to address broad, interdisciplinary needs of research service centers and shared equipment laboratories.
Assist/supervise repair, maintenance, troubleshooting, and operation of lab equipment and facilities including but not limited to optics, electronics, vacuum, sensors, DI, CDA, compressed gas delivery, and CW systems.
Create and maintain written logs, reports, procedures, and documentation on work performed.
Assist in the design, development, and construction of custom equipment and experimental setups
Provide training and oversight to faculty, staff, student, and industry users in the proper operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
Oversee and supervise laboratory maintenance schedule, including assigning maintenance tasks to student workers.
Work with Chemical Hygiene Officers and EHS&RM to implement laboratory specific safety plans in accordance with Texas State University’s Chemical Hygiene Plan
Maintain inventory of chemicals, PPE, consumables, equipment spares, technology resources, and other general supplies appropriate for laboratories.
Other duties as assigned.
