ABOUT THE POSITION
The Program Manager for Career and Student Employment oversees the delivery of career exploration, planning and preparation as an integral part of the student life cycle. The Manager ensures students are engaged in career exploration and development, providing information, resources and engagement opportunities that tie career goals with academic plans. This includes working closely with key partners in Outreach, Admissions, Advising, the Center for Leadership and Service, and Academic Affairs to connect students with campus and external employment opportunities, career assessments, mock interviews and resume guidance.
The Career and Student Employment Center is a unit within Advising, Transfer and Career Services. Services include general Academic Advising, New Student Orientations and prospective student information sessions, Transfer events and workshops, and Academic Success initiatives. The person in this position contributes to the overall Advising, Transfer and Career Services mission supporting and collaborating to provide students a holistic advising and career development experience. The Program Manager is part of the leadership team for Advising and Enrollment Services responsible for coordinating a seamless approach to services.

Essential Tasks

Reporting to the Director of Advising, Transfer, and Career Services this position will:

Program Operations (50%)

  • Develop, implement, assess and plan the delivery of Career and Student Employment Services with the director and dean to integrate holistic, student-centered career development into Advising and Enrollment Services processes
  • Manage the daily operations of the Career and Student Employment Center ensuring the availability of campus based and/or remote services
  • Collaborate with faculty to integrate career development into instructional initiatives
  • Plan events and develop programming that tie career exploration with academic advising and planning
  • Serve as liaison with vendors providing career assessment tools
  • Coordinate the campus student employment process working closely with Human Resources and employment funding sources including Financial Aid, WorkFirst and the Center for Leadership and Service (CLS)
  • Collaborate with faculty to provide students with discipline-specific career opportunities from internships to co-curricular learning opportunities.
  • Supervise and train classified, hourly or student workers
  • Provide culturally competent services and a welcoming environment for all prospective, and current students to utilize career development services
  • Lead professional development opportunities and inform advisors across campus of resources to enhance knowledge and skills pertaining to career development, exploration and planning
  • Provide general academic advising to connect students with academic programs that align with career interests

Advising (30%)
  • Guide students in connecting their interests, values and skills with both career and academic opportunities
  • Inform students and advisors of labor market trends and how academic programs and classes lead to the outcomes and options
  • Advise students in identifying classes and academic programs that align with career interests
  • Connect students with campus services resources based on holistic student development needs, campus policies and procedures
  • Help students connect with career-related experiences by proactively engaging local employers, professional organizations and alumni

Serve as part of Leadership Team for Advising and Enrollment Services (20%)
  • Work closely with academic advisors and the Director of Advising, Transfer and Career Services to infuse a career development lens into campus-wide advising practices
  • Develop resources to assist faculty and academic advisors to incorporate career information into advising
  • Participate as a member of the leadership team for Advising and Enrollment Services facilitating admission, retention and completion initiatives
  • Promote academic programs through a career pathway lens, collaborating with Communications and Marketing to bring awareness of Highline Pathways to internal and external customers
  • Participate in committees, and engage in campus initiatives, professional development, etc..

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to research current employment trends, labor market information
  • Ability to proactively conduct employer outreach and identify high demand careers available in the college service district
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to support students of all backgrounds
  • Ability to represent the college with professionalism, demonstrating effective group and one-on-one verbal communication skills
  • Ability to synthesize information, identify stakeholder needs and succinctly communicate verbally and in writing
  • Ability to use technology, social media, and communication and marketing services to inform the campus community
  • Ability to plan successful and engaging events that lead to learning outcomes
  • Ability to assess the program’s effectiveness and outcomes, and adjust services based on on-going assessments
  • Knowledge of community college academic programs, and 4-year transfer opportunities and processes
  • Knowledge of community college student services, and college student development needs
  • Cultural competence in supporting students from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to lead groups, oversee projects to fruition, and plan
  • Ability to supervise and promote a positive working environment
  • Ability to work remotely
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree AND 2 years of experience providing relevant student services or instruction in a higher education setting
  • OR
    • Five (5) years of experience providing relevant student services or instruction in a higher education setting

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    • Master’s Degree
