The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) administers nursing care, under the supervision of a registered nurse, and ensures the health, comfort, and safety of patients. The incumbent provides quality care to designated patients and takes on various responsibilities, such as participating in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care, as well as cooperating with the members of the nursing and medical staff and other hospital departments.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Collects patient assessment data and notifies appropriate nurse of actual or potential problems and needs on an ongoing basis.

  • Records patient information concisely, accurately, and completely.

  • Administers medications and performs treatments and procedures for all patients as assigned.

  • Assists with preparation of patient materials or correspondence that RNs, ARNPs, or MDs utilize to communicate with organizations within or outside the University.

  • Assists in preoperative and postoperative health teaching for patients and families.

  • Shares responsibility for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care plans.

  • Participates in team conferences, sharing knowledge, information, and ideas with team members.

  • Performs more-complex nursing activities as competence increases.

  • Communicates frequently with team leader regarding patients’ physical and mental conditions.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent

Certification and Licensing:

Valid State of Florida LPN license, BLS/ACLS/PALS

Experience:

Department Specific Functions (specific to the Environmental Health & Safety depa)

Assist in implementing and monitoring the University’s (TB) Surveillance Program.

  • Assist in TB screening and administering, reading, and scheduling of PPD skin testing.

  • Assist in record keeping of the TB Surveillance Program data.

  • Assist in collection, compilation and analysis of TB exposure surveillance testing data for all employees.

Assist in the Flu Vaccine Program

  • Administer Flu Vaccine to employees, contractors, students, and volunteers.

  • Assist with the Benefits Fair and the administration of the Flu Vaccine.

Assist in compliance monitoring and record keeping for University’s Bloodborne Pathogens Policy and Procedures (Exposure Control Plan).

  • Assist in administering Hepatitis B vaccine, or other injectables and immunizations as directed by the healthcare provider.

  • Assist the healthcare provider in providing post-exposure medical evaluation and follow-up to exposure incidents.

Assist in maintaining compliance with University’s Occupational Health Program for personnel working with animals.

  • Assist in administering vaccinations as directed by the healthcare provider.

  • Assist in providing post-exposure medical evaluation and follow-up to exposure incidents as directed by the healthcare provider.

On-call for exposure incidents on a monthly rotating basis.

Responsible for assisting nurse practitioner or registered nurse (RN) in assessing patients and contributes information to aid in the planning and evaluating of patient care.

Collect patient assessment data and notifies appropriate nurse practitioner or RN of actual and/or potential problems on an ongoing basis.

Perform vital signs, i.e. temperature, pulse, blood pressure and respirations, records on patient's chart and reports any unusual findings to nurse practitioner or RN.

Assist with medical procedures and obtains appropriate tubes for lab tests as ordered by the MD/ARNP.

Assist in the performance of venipuncture, preparation of specimens (urine, blood, etc.) for laboratory, including paperwork, centrifugation, etc. and places blood tubes in specimen bag for lab pick-up.

Administration of other immunizations as directed by healthcare provider.

Assist with the scheduling of tests and obtain results from specialty departments (chest x-rays, etc.).

Obtain laboratory and test reports, stamp date received, make notes for filing/scanning in Electronic Medical Records database.

Notify healthcare provider as soon as possible of all laboratory results and chest x-rays.

Assist with preparation of patient materials or correspondence, faxes prescriptions to pharmacies as directed by nurse practitioner verifies receipt.

Identify emergencies and notify healthcare provider immediately.

Maintain and organize clinical area(s) including equipment, cleaning, stocking, and ordering supplies.

Maintain proper storage of medications, immunizations. Daily monitoring and refrigerator temperature.

Schedule training for TB and Bloodborne Pathogens.

Assist in maintaining and scanning of medical records for clients (employees, contractors, students, etc.).

Enter data in the Employee Health Office electronic medical records software, filing and general office work including answering the telephone, filing and general office work.

Maintain the Human Resources databases for new employee clearances and follow-up non-compliance per protocol.

Assist other staff of Environmental Health and Safety as may be required due to excessive work load, illness, or vacation.

Perform other duties as assigned including emphasis on providing high quality customer service.
