Computer Science-Visiting Assistant ProfessorDate: 10/09/2020 Colby College invites applications for two full-time Visiting Assistant Professor positions in Computer Science, to start on September 1, 2021. The term of each position is one year, with a possibility of a second year for one of the positions. Applicants must hold, or be close to completing, a Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering, or a related area. We welcome applications from all areas of computer science, but preference will be given to those who teach analysis of algorithms or artificial neural networks. Review of applications will begin on 15 January 2021 and will continue until the position is filled. Full consideration will be given to candidates whose materials are received prior to the review date.

Colby College is a highly selective, comprehensive liberal arts college in Waterville, Maine. The department offers a major and a minor in computer science and participates in CS+X majors in Computational Biology, Environmental Computation, Computational Psychology, Interdisciplinary Computing [IC] Theater and Dance, and IC Music. Students pursuing these interdisciplinary majors take a mixture of CS courses and courses in their focus area. The department also supports a Data Science Minor and several other majors, including Biology, Physics and Astronomy, and Mathematics and Statistics. Colby Computer Science is involved in several multi-disciplinary initiatives in Computational Biology, Data Science, investments in computing and network infrastructure, and partnerships with the Jackson Laboratory and the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences.

The Colby CS program is an outward-facing program designed to integrate with and take advantage of its liberal arts environment. In addition to providing the foundations of a CS education, our core courses focus on the applications of computer science across the arts and humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences and mathematics.
The department is well-equipped with computing facilities including a large teaching lab, student project spaces, a research lab with Linux workstations, and a centralized research compute cluster. In addition, we have a strong connection with the University of Maine through the Maine Research Network [MEREN] for access to high performance computing and storage facilities. The teaching load for each position is 5 course equivalents per year. The courses taught will typically include a mixture of core CS courses and upper level electives. Since these are sabbatical replacement positions, we are seeking to hire individuals who can teach courses in the areas of those on sabbatical. Specifically, we are looking for candidates who teach theory (e.g. analysis of algorithms) or neural networks.
