Department Summary

The Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department at San José State University (SJSU) invites applications for one tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The Department is home to dynamic programs for BS and MS degrees in Biomedical Engineering. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, we have developed strong ties and long-standing collaborations with the diverse array of biomedical engineering industries that surround us. While most of our students stay in Silicon Valley upon graduation, and contribute actively to the dynamic growth in the Bay Area, a significant portion of our students have enjoyed successful careers around the country and abroad. Our rigorous BS and MS curricula were developed in close consultation with our Industry Advisory Council to ensure that our graduates are “industry-ready” with the skills and knowledge to begin successful careers in biomedical engineering. Many of our classes also benefit from the contributions of these industry experts who engage our students, share their practical experiences and, not infrequently, teach some of our classes.

The reputation of our educational programs for providing a unique practical approach is built on a strong academic foundation that continues to attract students. Student enrollment in our BS and MS programs has increased steadily since the department’s inception, with a current total student population of approximately 450. Many of our students are engaged in academic research with faculty in their research labs, or work on projects with industries in various capacities.

Our full-time faculty are all active researchers and continue to successfully attract major funding from industry, local and state-wide funding programs, and federal institutions such as the National Science Foundation, and the National Institutes of Health. The range of their research interests spans advanced biomaterials, prosthetics and orthotics, 3D printing, microfluidic devices for diagnostics, nanotechnology for drug delivery, and cardiovascular devices, among others.
