Job Summary

Provide comprehensive educational, career, and personal counseling services. Work in cooperation and consultation with other staff members of the Student Development Department and DMACC campus faculty, staff and administrators. Teach The College Experience and other courses designed to facilitate student success.

Essential Functions

Provide professional counseling services for the academic, personal, and career planning needs of the students.

Academic counseling, in which the student is assisted in assessing, planning and implementing his or her immediate and long-range academic goals; career counseling, in which the student is assisted in assessing his or her aptitudes, abilities, and interests, and advised concerning current and future employment trends; and personal counseling, in which the student is assisted with personal, family or other social concerns, when that assistance is related to the student’s education.

Design and implement counseling in the form of support groups, classroom presentations, workshops and informational material for students and to assist faculty and staff.

Provide consultation support to DMACC faculty, staff, and administration.

Provide career planning services to include assisting students in clarifying career goals through intake interviews, administration and interpretation of career assessment instruments, instruction in career exploration, and instruction in career goal-setting and decision-making.

Teach The College Experience and other courses designed to facilitate student success.

Maintain involvement in professional development including both on and off-campus offerings to promote and further enhance the role of the counselor in promoting the mission of the community college.

Maintain community connections for referral resources that will provide students with ongoing support for professional counseling, etc. and thus supporting and assisting our student population.

Provide support to a comprehensive developmental studies program to meet the educational needs of DMACC students.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in Counseling, Student Personnel Services with an emphasis in Counseling, American or Marriage Family/Therapy/Counseling or Social Work.

One year of mental health counseling experience.

Knowledge of Career Testing Instruments.

Experience working with a wide range of students such as adults, traditional/nontraditional, vocational/technical majors, arts & sciences majors, and minorities/ethnic populations.

Experience in utilizing various forms of communication such as written, group presentations and one on one counseling.

Experience working in a team environment as well as independently.

Knowledge of current software applications.

Demonstrated effectiveness working with populations having diverse values and/or coming from varied cultures and backgrounds.

Desired Qualifications

One year of counseling experience within an educational setting.

College teaching experience.

Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional counselor.

Professional competence in providing assessment, diagnosis, interventions for depression, anxiety, alcohol/drug use/abuse, relationship violence, developmental concerns, or other issues frequently faced by college students.

Ability to speak a language in addition to English.
