Department The Florida State University Art Therapy Program within the Department of Art Education seeks a tenure-track assistant professor or associate level professor, whose focus is on art therapy education, research, and service.
The Department of Art Education maintains a strong commitment to the philosophy of art for life, especially social justice issues. It is the oldest department of its kind in the southeast and one of the elite art education departments in North America, solely offering graduate degrees. The department is accredited through both NCATE and NASAD. The department offers master’s and doctoral degrees in art education, arts administration, museum education and visitor-centered curation, and art therapy and is located in the state-of-the-art LEED certified William Johnston Building, along with the Departments of Interior Architecture and Art History. These Departments, along with The Department of Art Education, are a part of the Florida State University College of Fine Arts.
The Florida State University Graduate Art Therapy program offers degrees in Master of Science in Art Therapy as well as the Doctor of Philosophy in Art Education, specializing in Art Therapy. The Masters-level program emphasizes a thorough theoretical foundation of art therapy techniques and applications as well as three full practicum experiences working within community and clinical settings. The program integrates research-informed practices to foster culturally sensitive graduates who understand and apply the power of the visual arts and therapeutic relationships to promote personal and community wellness.
The two-year, two-summer Art Therapy Program began in the 1980’s. The program was initially approved by the American Art Therapy Association in 2004 and became Accredited through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) in January 2019. It is the only graduate level art therapy program in the state of Florida. It has a highly competitive acceptance rate and attracts students from all over the country.

This 9-month position also offers additional opportunities for summer teaching.Qualifications The successful candidate will have completed a doctorate in art therapy or a closely related field, will be Board Certified (ATR-BC) through the Art Therapy Credential Board, and will have an established record of published research and clinical experience.
Candidates must be licensed or license eligible in art therapy and/or a related mental health profession.Preferred Experience with coordination of practicum placement and instruction of practicum supervision is preferred.
