Responsibilities
  • Serves as primary consultant for large or complex research grant program(s) / initiative(s).
    • Grow and manage multi-million dollar, multiparty, and multi-year grants with multiple stakeholders (faculty, researchers, funders, campus administration)
    • Counsel and suggest to faculty research opportunities that further existing research.
    • Drawing upon experience with grant management, advise faculty and researchers on solutions to issues that arise involving data collection and analysis, study subjects, funders, impact evaluation, and reporting requirements.
  • Consults with faculty and researchers on development of proposals.
    • In consultation with Faculty Director, identify high yielding opportunities that advance IBSI's research agenda, including those that bolster existing research portfolios or launch new portfolios.
    • Cultivate strong networks of donors and partners (faculty, postdocs, doctoral students) that support IBSI's research agenda.
    • Work with Faculty Director and center/initiative teams to respond to relevant calls for proposals.
    • Draft concepts notes and generate buy-in for research programs.
  • Collaborates within unit, the organization and among participants to analyze, evaluate and further research objectives and results.
    • Initiate and hold IBSI research seminar series featuring current portfolio research. The seminar series highlights faculty, Postdocs and PhD students working on a recent or active grant presents to Haas and other faculty to generate interest and further research opportunities
    • Maintain a regular cadence (at least 1x/month) of meeting with Haas or campus faculty for updates on research interests and opportunities.
  • Represents initiative with other organizations within the academic or scientific community and with government and community stakeholders sharing common objectives.
    • Attend relevant professional and funder conferences and events.
    • Develop and maintain network of partners in IBSI research interest areas such as World Bank, InterAmerican Development Bank, Gates Foundation, Robert Woods Johnson Foundation, etc.
  • Reviews and analyzes the program's and other funders' portfolios for emerging issues and research.
    • Conduct regular meetings with portfolio Principal Investigators to assess progress and support needs.
    • Review funder research reports and collateral (including social media) as well as academic journals to source additional research opportunities.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in research area to identify expert advisors and peer reviewers.
    • Maintain membership in professional organizations in one or more of IBSI's research areas (diversity, equity and inclusion, sustainability, financial inclusion, etc)
    • Actively reviews the state of the literature and is familiar with the knowledge frontier that is relevant to IBSI research's agenda, including methodological work.
  • Serves as program officer for portfolio of awards.
    • Represents IBSI in its portfolio of grants to campus partners (mainly Special Projects Office) and funders
    • In collaboration with award managers,drafts annual report and other reporting as required by awards.

    • Attend relevant campus training courses or classes to gain knowledge of or to become more proficient with campus policies and/or role relevant skills.
    • Seek additional training opportunities that allow growth within the position and to develop professionally.

Required Qualifications
  • In-depth academic background and experience in selected area of research including record of publications in related field(s) required.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills. Advanced skills analyzing information, problems, situations, policies or procedures to define the problem, need or objective.
  • Proven ability to formulate solutions, new program development, alternative choices and implications for implementation.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse groups to achieve results.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with internal and external peers, managers and teams.
  • Advanced program planning and management of projects.
  • Practical knowledge of aligning diverse faculty research interests with the needs of donors.
  • Experience and familiarity with large corporate and private foundations; track record of successful grant wins.
  • Experience and demonstrated success with technical grant writing for behavioral and/or field research projects.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience and competency working with decision-makers in multilateral, government, and/or large research institutions.
  • Knowledge and experience shepherding a grant proposal through UC Berkeley's grant approval process (Special Projects Office)
  • Knowledge of academic literature of one or more of these fields: gender issues, youth, sustainability, entrepreneurship.
  • Ability to collaborate and develop rigorous and methodologically sound research projects, including in the design and set up of large scale field experiments.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary will be commensurate with experience up to $145,000.00 at 100% time / $72,500.00 at 50% time.
