Job Description Summary

The Director of Instructional Design & Online Learning for Penn Vet will provide leadership and expertise in innovative approaches for instructional design and teaching and learning in the online environment. Reporting to the Associate Dean of One Health at Penn Vet, the Director of Instructional Design & Online Learning will be a part of the One Health Academic Innovation Unit and will directly support faculty and instructional teams, coordinates with internal and external partners, and is a key architect of student experiences for all existing and new online/hybrid courses and digital initiatives in the School.

Job Description

This individual will have direct responsibility for ensuring the quality and standards of all online offerings at Penn Vet. They will have the in-depth knowledge and understanding of online course development processes and will direct Penn Vet faculty, staff and other stakeholders in the generation of effective online learning experiences for existing and new academic programs. These include the online Graduate Certificate Program in Animal Welfare and Behavior, the online Master of Science in Animal Welfare & Behavior and multiple online and blended for-credit and not-for-credit courses and programs in development. The Director of Instructional Design & Online Learning will leverage the most current pedagogical approaches and educational technologies to create engaging and scalable online courses. This role will also provide Penn Vet leadership, faculty and staff with advice and support for best practices associated with course development and project management, including adherence to timelines and budgets.

While managing the day-to-day responsibilities associated with instructional design and online learning course development, the Director of Instructional Design & Online Learning will work closely with One Health Academic Innovation Unit colleagues to enhance marketing efforts by creating multimedia assets. The Director will liaise with the Penn Vet Educational Technology team to coordinate course development with deployment and address technological challenges that may arise. Additionally, the Director of Instructional Design & Online Learning will be the Penn Vet representative to the larger Instructional Design community at Penn (the ID Working Group and Online Directors Group). Through these contacts as well as attendance at relevant national conferences, the Director will remain abreast of present and forthcoming trends in instructional design and online learning.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Instructional Design and 3-5 years of experience in an academic setting, working effectively with faculty and staff to develop new online programming or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. The individual must have the ability to communicate diplomatically and effectively with faculty and staff and the desire to advance their own knowledge of online learning and train others as appropriate. Evidence that candidate has successfully launched a new online program is preferred. A candidate who has the ability to work within a team to organize program development, meet deadlines within budget is also preferred. A cover letter is required.
